    thread

Ras is right. This tread should be up in the"general discussion" section. I saw it by chance and was thinking TC or Crazy Steve would move it.

Ras is correct this forum is for events in the Northeast... there is a technical forum where these questions would be more appropriately placed. I assure you no one feels burdened by your questions...its been played out here many times over...getting the attention of the real gurus in the technical forums is where you really want to be... Indeed TC ...we need to move this to the proper venue....

No he has a 4-1 on there and is experiencing the usual problem concerning oil changes. The drain bolt has to come out to get all the oil out. Pipes will have to come off to get il filter housing off.

I see your point. But let me get my feet wet a little before I expose my blank slate to the world. It Took me three days to find the oil bolt! Good news I got it off and let all the oil drain.

Next thing I'd like to do is get the gas tank emptied and cleaned. Back to the manual

Edit: just read the last 3 posts. I guess we're going primetime!

            Hi Blank Slate,
Definitely aftermarket exhaust. You will have to remove it to get the filter changed and with black oil definitely time for a filter change.
DO NOT lose the spring and washer in the oil filter housing
http://www.partsnmore.com/parts/yamaha/ have the exhaust gaskets and lots of other stuff you may want or need. They ship from Stratford ON

Hi Phil, thanks for that. Here's a safety question first. I fear this bike is going fall on me and crush me when I go under it. The only thing holding it up is the foot stand. Can I get something to stabilize it while I work on it?

Once I get the bike stable I will feel comfortable tackling its many issues.

Hi Blank Slate. I use a floor jack at the cross piece infront of the engine to lift then place axle stands under the crash bars I have on both sides, then remove the jack. Ofcourse I put it on the centre stand first for this to work.
You definitely must secure the bike before going under it.

                  I doubt

he still has a centerstand if he has a 4-1 header.

Costco has a low profile aluminum jack for cars around $210.
But I suppose I need one for motorcycles?

hassle or not theres not much out there to replace them with...you'll have to look pretty hard...OEM is gone and there are no aftermarket companies making an exhaust for our bikes anymore...yes the headers have to come off to remove the oil filter...welcome to the club...LOL

Lol, oh well. so is using steel wool on the pipes to remove rust a good idea? Tons of rust underneath but I am worried I'm going to put a hole in them and really be screwed

No, that will impede the removal of the pipes and filter housing. What you want is one like this,
                            http://http://www.harborfreight.com/...ump-62116.html
As was stated, it is placed under the cross bar at the front of the frame, and then raised until the sump is level, or sloped to drain. If placed correctly, it should not interfere with the pipe removal.
It, the jack, should be allowed to roll back as the arm is raised, since if it isn't, it can pull the bike forward off of the center stand.

I see bolts in 2 an 4. I hope they won't be a serious issue, but they need to go. You need to go back with studs. OEM style nuts are still available, but not absolutely necessary.

                                Exhausts

I have a good set of OEM headers (2-1) here you can have, to clone on an aftermarket exhaust system. This will restore the ability to have a center stand and removal of the fluid drains and oil filter housing. You'll have to graft on exhausts to the headers but there are lots of " how to threads" on that. I'm not a welder but I'm sure madmax could walk you through it. Back those bolts out of the head while you have the 4-1 off and put the proper studs in. I have a couple extras here with the nuts, but there was two sizes used and I'm not sure which you have. If you can back out one of the OEM ones, you can take that to Napa and they can probably hand a couple new ones right over the counter.
