Fired up for the first time, how to keep it running?

    1.7 ohms is within the tolerance range. The caps are the boots the sparkplugs plug into. Should see upto 25k across them with the boots on (each coil). And, the plugs do not "un-plug", they screw off. Grab the plug wire firmly, and unscrew the plug cap.

    I know u cleaned your carbs, but did you make sure your idle screw tips were not broke?

      I'm getting 14.3 across each pair with caps removed.

      I'm not sure what the idle screw tips are, I'll research and get back to you.

          Remember to keep your battery topped up during all this testing and diagnostic work. the battery is under a drain whenever the key is on. The charging system doesn't kick in until the motor is running at 2500 rpm. Put it on a trickle charge (2 amp or less) between troubleshooting sessions.
          Keep at it. These guys are the masters and WILL get you going.

            Battery is dead, I've been jumping it from my car. I didn't want to waste money on a new battery if the engine ended up been trash.

              In the case of resistsnce measuring, voltage should not be supplied. Other than checking voltage to the coils, you should be good. Did you check voltage across the battety before, and during crank?

                Did you check voltage across the battety before, and during crank?
                I charge it for 10 hours, and it might crank the engine for 3 seconds. Pretty sure it's dead.

                  Lol, I hope you understsnd that with these bikes being TCI-based, and not points & condensors, the bike is dependent on a healthy battery. Bad batteries cause funny things.

                    Even jumped, the XS1100 WILL NOT RUN WITH A DEAD BATTERY!! Been there, tried that with a couple of other members here for someone who has since passed. We were working on his bike, and had BIG cable between his battery and the car battery. engine would not start. Bought a new battery, charged it, and bike fired right up.

                      Gremlins

                      Sometimes one or more of the spade terminals inside of a multi-connector plug get damaged beyond repair. Rather than replace both halves of the connector, you can go around the connector by butt connecting the affected wire(s).

                      The damage is not necessarily caused by dirty connectors, but rather by too much (electrical) resistance caused by poor or improper grounds. The fix for this problem is to ground everything to the battery rather than the chassis. This will cure/end a whole lot of gremlins in these bikes.

                      Look for battery grounding in the search heading.

                            Hmm. The pic could be fuzzy, but the tips all look broken.

                              I got it running.

                              I pulled the pilots again. I didn't realize there was a hole in the non-slotted end. Cleaned that and reassembled. Cranked right up, even idles on its own. Got a lot of fuel/rich smoke, but at this point I don't care, I'm just really excites it runs.

                                The idle mixture screws for years 80 and up look like the ones in the above picture, they are not the pointed type of the earlier carbs.
