the rear light unit chrome had rusted in the usual places and needed to be redone, along with the indicator stalks. Then I realised the fender would definitely look inferior with the newly chromed bits on it. 'Mission creep' !XS1100F 1980 European model. Standard. Dyna coils. Iridium plugs. James, do you have trouble finding a chrome plater over there?
It seems that the US government has crippled the small platers in this country with regulations to the point that there are very few chrome platers left that will do job lots of parts. And the ones that do are expensive.
I've heard that the British government is cracking down on hexavalent chrome plateing, and will cause the same problem over there.
Nice job on the restoration. If the exhaust fabricators replicated the original innards, I can understand the price they charge. There are a lot of parts inside.

Here's an update folks......with plenty of pix which we all know and love...
I picked up the rechromed bits from a chroming company only 6 miles away. I had the following parts done...rear fender and light bracket, front and rear indicator stems, fuel cap, gearchange lever (which they have lost and are currently trawling their vats for!)
The new exhaust system arrived from Germany this week but I've only just had time to unpack it, so here's some pix.....
Box isn't too big...
Silencer
Other side
Yamaha part number engraved on for a authentic look.....
Headers and little bag of Haribo candy from the seller, Bjorn. I can chew on these whilst contemplating my depleted bank balance...
Headers take standard finned flanges to attach to cylinder head..
I'll be starting the fitting of the system in the next few days and will post some pix as things progress........XS1100F 1980 European model. Standard. Dyna coils. Iridium plugs. Here's a few pix of the complete exhaust system installed on the bike. It took only minor tweaking of the two support brackets (adding a few washers) to get everything lined up. The centre stand foot pedal needs to be bent out wards by about 2mm as it's just catching on the side of the silencer. Apart from that, it's an easy fit. The headers slot into the silencers without the need for clamps, just a bit of silicone.
I'm looking for a couple of heat shields now which cover the joints on the OEM system ..just to finish it off. I got some from Denmark last time but am trawling eBay for some daily.....
Underneath view did the two silencer boxes

Imagine the cost, OMG, could buy five bikes over here for the cost of the chroming not to mention the custom fab exhaust ?

The tank, panels and seat trims and cowl went off to the spray shop today and will be done in the Yamaha paint code..it's black with a fine dusting of gold under the lacquer, new decals etc. By the way, the seat trims are now made new here in the UK..... Original ones are usually rusty and in very poor condition, so a manufacturer here now makes them and they are excellent. Trim fitting kits are available too.
So, the next update will be with the paint job done.also four replica indicators which I also got from Germany. I've found OEM ones are always pitted and bubbled, with dull lenses and generally tatty. The replicas are 99% right and actually less expensive than buying duff OEM ones.....
Btw if anyone has any chrome exhaust trims from a US standard, in very good condition, I'd be very interested in buying them......
The final stage will be to get the engine tuned. I've run it briefly with no headers and it ran on all four cylinders, so the carb rebuilds have cured the rough running on 3 (I found a blocked jet).
Onwards and upwards!Last edited by James England; 11-03-2014, 05:42 PM.XS1100F 1980 European model. Standard. Dyna coils. Iridium plugs. XS750 final drive (sometimes). Micron fork brace. It's gonna be another beauty, and it looks like they got the 'angle' right in the exhaust this time. And while many will blanch at the cost of that exhaust, given what NOS OEM systems have gone for on the rare occasions that they show up, the price is competitive.Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

I would really like to know the source of the exhaust. Cost is comparative to new stock systems. I would be curious to know if they are in the business of building a new system for a special. My thinking being that if it were new then I could have it sent out to have a black chrome finish put on it. No one wants to mess with used systems for re chroming in any color but if it were brand new then I think the story might be different. Believe it would be worth looking into if you could divulge the source. If you want you can PM me with that information if it does not need to be shared publicly.
By the way ..... beautiful job so far on that machine. It looks awesome.2 - 80 LGs bought one new
