My Battery is toast

i have discoverd what i believe is the cause of my main fuse blown out when i tried to charge the old dried out battery. AC voltage should be at a minimum like you say. The battery charger was damaged but it had been working prior to the last time i used it...its going in the trash as i now have a new BatteryMinder Plus...the same one TC just bought......

my battery tenders are 13.2v DC and .75 A output no ac at all at the battery

Hey BNE my battery is plastic not toast and it works maybe you should switch to whole grain or maybe pumpernickel .

BTW I suspected my old battery charger caused the main fuse to blow on my bike...just measured the voltage coming out of the charger and I see 6.6 volts AC...that aint right??? The battery charger was damaged when it got a little crushed in my garage a few yrs ago but it still worked fine...brother says there should only be DC voltage...IDK

More updates.

Okay, first a few photos of the ~4 y/o battery after multiple attempts as reviving!

First shows some 12.5 volts. Second shows the LOAD TEST!



Now for the NEW BATTERY....it's not made in CHINA, but in Vietnam!


And first showing the voltage right out of the box.


And then the LOAD TEST, the bottom of the green scale is for the ~300 CCA range, vs. 400 and 500 above that. It's still in the green after some 5 or so seconds, and the voltage at ~11.00.


After this I put it on the pulse charger, and it ran overnight, but was blinking ready the next morning. And measured at ~13.5 volts. I haven't put it in the bike YET....as you all know the Arctic blast is even reaching to Virginia.
And I have another project I have to do first on Swmbo's car...replace the AC compressor that's sitting on my bench!

what amazes me about the Yuasa is that not only is it 8 yrs old but it had the exact same voltage as the new Deka i just put into the Yamaha...12.7 volts out of the box and qucikly charged up to 13.45 volts...

I still have contact with the previous ST owner so I decided to ask him about the Yuasa. He told me its in my stack of receipts and the log book he metciculously kept . Battery was replaced in May 2005 so its 8 yrs old...still going strong too...Thats my kind of battery... and its small too...abt 2/3rds the size of the batteries we use in the XS/XJ11s'...

Hi Ben,
Since lead-acid wet cell batteries like to be used, not 'shelved', IMO the factory digital clock on the ST has helped extend its battery life.

The Mike's XS AGM battery in my XS650 has just given up. It lasted 9 years! I find it hard to believe myself!

You've only had the bike 4 years, and as I've read on the ST forum, the YUASA OEM style battery is/was available as a replacement, and I would assume that many of the ST owners would have sought the YUASA as a replacement, especially back then when the AGM/maintenance free types were not as common or reliable.

SO....at best, it was replaced once, perhaps around 7 or so years old, which would then make this one ~6 years old. OR it could even have been replaced twice?? You would need to contact the PO and inquire as to the battery history to be sure.

.......maybe, the Exide in my STeed just hit 9yrs. and been on a charger once resulting from error made by the nut holding the bars.

Found info on the battery I bought on 9-2012. It is a Super Start-PowerSport AGM maint. free. model GTX18LFAJ 340 cca. Out the door for $76 and change with core exchange. It replaced the lead acid battery from Advance Auto. Hope this helps in the search for a local supplier. Fires the bike right up at 20-25 deg. That was a chilly ride to work. Have a Happy New Year guys!!

I looked up that model number on O'Reilly Auto Parts website but it did not show up?

It replaced the lead acid battery from Advance Auto. Hope this helps in the search for a local supplier. Fires the bike right up at 20-25 deg. That was a chilly ride to work.
