Realize that their engines are just engines, not engine and transmission combined, also they are V-Twin, not in line four cylinders. So its kind of like lifting a Renault LeCar engine out or a Chevy 454. Or say back in the day I would lay on my back and lift the 3-spd tranny in and out of my F250, not going to try that with the TH400 in my Cutlass.

Those Harley engines aren't as light as you think.....

While the big twin motors don't have the clutch and transmission attached, they have huge flywheels on the crankshaft, and they're not light....

The Sportster motor/tranny units weigh about the same as an XS motor, right around 220 lbs.
Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

To me it's not that they're that heavy, there's just no really good handholds on the things. Cooling fins on the front right and the middle drive piece on the back left. They need a place to screw a couple handles in.. lol.

Generally, after I get it into the frame, I stradle the frame like I would sit on the bike and move it around until I get it to drop into the mounts.

No, I am saying that if you have a near bare frame it is easier to do it that way rather than trying to move the engine into the frame.

In no way am I saying you should strip the frame just to put the engine in.

Thanks for the good tips! Sounds like I don't have near the dis-assembly nightmare I was dreading! I will protect the frame and keep the bike vertical with a bud and a beer!

I have been searching for the info on the washer switch with no luck, ant hints where to look?

Thank for those additions, I've put them onto the end of the Dremel Fix tech tip, should help those doing the fix and wanting to also perform the washer swap!

                            New engine is here

Going to pull the motor tomorrow but wanted to practice the 2nd gear stuff on the old engine once it's out and on the bench.

In reading the tech thread I couldn't find mention of the way to hold the trans from turning once it's on the bench. From the article it looks like both the main clutch nut and the countershaft bolt (both 51 ft. lbs. of torque) will rotate the gear assembly, should I get them loose prior to disconnecting the output shaft? What about reassembly - tighten the countershaft bolt as much as I can on the bench but wait until it's in the bike to tighten and install the clutch basket?

Gotta be a better way! Thanks!

Not quite sure what you're saying here.. but it won't matter if the transmission inadvertently turns some. It's not like it has to stay on some timing marks like the crank/cams. Think about it... While in operation, some gears turn while other lay idle.

I think he's talking about torqueing the counter shaft, and clutch drum nuts Tod. ( Well, technically the countershaft has bolt)

It may be against Hoyle but I just stuck a screwdriver in the teeth of the gears to keep them from turning.
