Only rotate it enough to get the shim out. That is how that tool works.

IF the cam chain, tensioner and such are all properly adjusted and set, then what's the concern about rotating the engine the OTHER way a 1/2 valve cam rotation to be able to use the motion pro tool, just to get the shims out and in??? I've done it on an XJ that we were working on last year, and it's easier to work/use the motion pro tool from the inner side/spark plug side of the valve bucket assembly especially when the engine is IN the frame and such!
I can understand a concern if the CCT was loose which would then permit chain slack and the chance of it hopping a crank sprocket tooth. But if the CCT is set correctly, then there really isn't any great amount of slack to cause this problem when rotating the engine CCW vs. it's normal CW rotation, as seen from the timing cover side.
But I'm willing to listen and learn from others more knowledgeable and experienced than me. Always willing to learn something new.

I just do not want all the guys who are a little on the light side of being mechanics to know the possible problems.
As you say " I can understand a concern if the CCT was loose which would then permit chain slack and the chance of it hopping a crank sprocket tooth. But if the CCT is set correctly, then there really isn't any great amount of slack to cause this problem when rotating the engine CCW vs. it's normal CW rotation, as seen from the timing cover side."
I just wanted to be sure that anyone attempting this knew about the rest of the fuss before attempting the adjustment/check. If the crank rotation is only done in one direction then CCT's that are incorrectly adjusted or loose will not affect it as much or maybe cause the possible tooth jumping.
I may be wrong but that is how I do it and so far (knock on wood) I have yet to bend a valve.2-79 XS1100 SF

Well tomorrow I'm going to rotate the engine the dreaded other direction. Service manual says to do it, my cam chain is tight and the Raptor ACCT is doing its job.
Woooooo!79F

Well, I ran to three different shops and found the Shim I needed to get the correct intake clearance for intake on number one.
It has vacuum now!
But now it has a fuel delivery problem. It'll Rev when I stick a spray of some sort into the vac port...
It still fires sporadically at high Rev.
So.... Time to go into the carbs.... AGAIN.79F

Took the carb off the rack.... Took it apart. It is going into the ultrasonic cleaner.
That'll clean it good!79F

So.... I think number one isn't firing because my butterfly seals are boned.
On all my other carbs, the butterflies are smooth.
Number 1 hangs up and won't shut on its own sometimes.79F

Well, a night in the ultrasonic... Put it all back together and installed.
While running I spray inside the vac tube and I get fire.
I spray all the linkage, nothing revs. So no butterfly leak.
It backfires or whatever still when revving at 4k.
Synced, but colortune shows no fire unless I spray something in it..
I'm running out of ideas.....79F

No fuel? Did it run OK on prime? If not this is what I would try. With bike off and cold, put the carbs on prime. Open the float drain and put a catch pan under it. See if the bowl empties and keeps flowing or if it reduces to a slow drip. If fuel delivery is an issue this way, maybe the inlet screen on the carb is plugged with debris, the float is stuck in a closed position, an inline fuel filter is plugged or restricted, or the filter tower in the tank is plugged. Maybe other possibilities?Skids (Sid Hansen)

Okay.... Well, fuel flows plenty with the prime on and carb bowl check open.
Fills a container quite rapidly.79F

Ahh, no need to sweat it. Is there any way the carb t's were obstructed? What does the plug look like? Throw a piece of clear line from the petcock to carb to verify fuel flow. You have spark on that cylinder? Float valve obviously works if you have fuel flow.1979 XS1100F

I removed number 1 from the rack, full detail disassembled it. And stuck it all into my ultrasonic.
Both Ts are spotless.
I have plenty of spark, the colortune sees it, and my hand feels it when I get to comfortable with the wires.
I get fuel because number two works fine and I see it through the filter.79F

Another thing I thought of is if your mixture screw has a broken tip?1979 XS1100F

Nope. Mixture screws are all brand new. And you can see sunlight though all of the respective holes in the carbs.79F
