    Okiedokie.

So I gotta remove the shims... Then find replacements locally... Or order the kit online... Unless someone on the forum has Em.

Trying to get it done this month at least!

Well, my valve tool is at home.

But I'm out on vacation for a couple days, so I'll get right on it when I get home.

            ALRIGHT!

Took a little fiddling to figure out the motion pro tool. But I got it going.

The offending in shim from my number 1 intake is out.

            It's a 265 Shim.

The little gap happened to be right where I needed it to be, what if the little gap isn't? How do you spin them around?

Rotate the engine around until the cam is off the shim, then you should be able to spin/rotate the shim bucket around with a pic or something (or maybe even your finger). It'll be slick because of the oil and with no pressure from the cam pressing down on it, it'll spin, then line up the notch and viola!

Alright awesome. Doing that now with the exhaust on number one.

It's a lot easier to move when the cam isn't contacting it.

On my intake it's contacting and I forgot about it.

                Thanks!

From left to right.... The intakes are removed and written down, then put back in.

                    265/260/265/265

I can't figure out the exhaust because the cam spins the other direction.

My procedure was to push the valve down with the cam... Insert tool... Then twist cam again.

I can't do that with the exhaust because I don't want to spin the engine the other way...

You only ever spin the motor in its proper direction. The exhaust cams will open/close up when they are supposed to and that is when you need to take your measurement. Never reverse the direction of rotation in order to check valve clearance. The only thing that can lead to is problems.
You may have to wind the engine over a few times to get the cam position right but that is the only correct way to check. Using the MP tool you only have the option of checking one valve at a time so be sure you are doing it correctly or you may damage valves.

Well, how can I use the motion pro tool if the cam spins the opposite direction?

Whenever I try to use the tool, it cocks off to the side and won't hit the bucket... So yeah...

Today I drove 3 hours round trip to get a Vetter mk 4 fairing!

                              Hey Ras,

I may be showing my "ignorance" here, as I've stated before I'm not a real mechanic, just a shadetree survivalist with a few years experience wrenching on my bike.

IF the cam chain, tensioner and such are all properly adjusted and set, then what's the concern about rotating the engine the OTHER way a 1/2 valve cam rotation to be able to use the motion pro tool, just to get the shims out and in??? I've done it on an XJ that we were working on last year, and it's easier to work/use the motion pro tool from the inner side/spark plug side of the valve bucket assembly especially when the engine is IN the frame and such!

I can understand a concern if the CCT was loose which would then permit chain slack and the chance of it hopping a crank sprocket tooth. But if the CCT is set correctly, then there really isn't any great amount of slack to cause this problem when rotating the engine CCW vs. it's normal CW rotation, as seen from the timing cover side.

But I'm willing to listen and learn from others more knowledgeable and experienced than me. Always willing to learn something new.
