Do you have a local bike shop? Lots of bikes used these 29mm shims, but one of them used a 29.5mm, and it won't fit in the shim bucket. Most shops will have a supply of them. Some will just swap oput with you, but I've given as much as $5 a piece for them. If you do have a local shop, either have them mic the shims or you bring a meter with you to do it. You can't tell the diference by looking at them.. even holding them on top of each other. It (The 29.5 shims) just won't fit down into the shim bucket.

If it is a bent valve and nobody has a spare here, go to the XS triples site and inquire since their valves are the same as yours. I doubt there'll be too much of a problem getting one.

      +1 on the shim diameter!
A while back, I went to the yamie dealer and they pulled out this old box that was full of shims and let me swap, got home and they were too big! (29.5mm) ARGHHH!
Went back and got my two shims back.
Called around town.... guess what, the BWM bike dealer had 29mm shims. Cost me about $6 each, but hey for 2 who cares. I got them that day!

Doesn't necessarily have to be from a Yammy dealer either. Kawasaki uses 29mm shims also.

          OK everyone!

          I have returned.

I made time for my precious Excelsior and removed the valve cover and measured all of my valvelash.
I don't know which is exhaust and which is intake... So I just numbered them and measured each one.

Then I looked at the manual. WOW my numbers are pretty far off.
The one labeled number 2 wouldn't even let me slide the gauge through. So it's not bent, just needs a valve shimming baaaaaaaad

          Here are my results.

This is the easiest way, 1mm = .002in.

No need to convert to metric. Here are the charts.....

So that graph... Works by this...

I have to remove the Shim... See what I have, then look at the graph and it tells me what I'll actually need.... Correct?

Then use the chart to figure the shim you need. Set your clearances to the widest of the specs because as these adjustments wear they close up.

Understand? When the valves are correctly set they are loud.

Which reminds me, I need to set them on my SG.
