Screw it. I still have the old tank off of Okie. I need to go get it sandblasted though. The paint is about 1/4" thick on that thing I've had to repair it so many times.
I've been scraping the paint off around there and it doesn't look good.
Oh well, another $125 - $150 shot in the.........foot. Not to mention the time. I GOTTA get a cheaper habit, maybe smack.Greg

I repaired a tank that was just like yours. I first de rusted the inside with various methods. Then I ground away all the paint. Then I fiberglassed the entire underside. Then I lined the inside with Red Kote. Then I sanded the fiberglass-filled sanded sanded and sanded. End product looks like new and its holding up fine but WAS ALOT OF LABOR!!!!!!!! If you can find a good tank it would be better IMHO to spend the $$ instead of the time!

Buddy of mine had the same problem, only worse. Electric soldering iron and lots of flux did the trick. I wouldn't recommend it, but he even soldered it with gas still in the tank and just tilting the bad side up. It definitely can be soldered with a good iron and acid core solder.2H7 (79) owned since '89

That is s till salvageable. I would hit it with electrolysis to get rid of as much rust internally and externally as possible. Then sandblast it to get rid of all the paint/filler/crap on the outside.
After that, brazing (NOT soldering) will make a strong, permanent solution. As brazing flows much better than welding, it will also seek out those little pinholes and seal them too.
Then, test for leaks and do the body work and paint and you will have a like new tank. One thing I would recommend is when you are sure all is sealed up, treat the inside with phosphoric acid to slow down the rust in the future.-- Clint

Maybe a local radiator shop can fix you up? I had my CB650 tank fixed up a few years ago for about 50 bux. They braze it.
I repaired an old 3-wheeler tank for a buddy a while ago with some SilvAlloy and mapp gas. Been about 10 years and still not leaking. That tank was in BAD shape.1) Fire up Internet Explorer
2) http://www.yahoo.com
3) type "www.mapquest.com" into the Yahoo search page.

I actually JB Welded a carb post a few years back, and it held up until the owner of the bike sold it. As far as I know it's still holding up fine. YMMV.
Greg, many years/decade + ago I got some tank liner liquid from JC Whitney, but their automotive section, was designed to seal in tanks that still had small surface RUST. It worked great in the Special Tank I had on Godzilla for some 8-9 years before I swapped over to the XJ tank. I had some of it(Sealer/Liner) left over and put it IN the XJ tank as well. It's held up fine, no pealing loose, etc.! It was also for tanks holding Ethanol enhanced fuel!
Seems a shame to have to waste all of your work/paint!

I can paint another one.
Like I said before, there was other damage I didn't see until I had it painted. It looked as though someone had dropped it upside down and it landed on the gascap. It was pushed in around the filler and somehow I didn't see that before.
I'm going to just cut my losses on this one. I still have the old tank from Okie and despite the thick paint on it I know it's solid.Greg

Sounds like your just getting a different tank. So just for others who may be interested, I had this same issue with the tank on Banshee (my SH). Painted it, ready to put it on, loaded with gas and leakers all over the place. Mine were smaller pin holes.
I got the Caswell Coatings tank kit. A local XSive had used it on his Standard tank, and there was plenty left for my Special tank, so he sold me what he had left. It has been since 2010 and still holds up just fine. IF I had larger holes like some shown on this tank, I would JB Weld them in, and put the Caswell liner over it.
The same XSive that sold me the Caswell kit, had an issue develop with his filler neck drain rusting out inside the tank. This turns it into a tank drain instead of a filler neck drain. He used JB Weld to seal it, lasted about two years IRRC. Then he got a really wet crotch during a ride!! He now has a replacement tank.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Yeah, it's gonna be fixed right or replaced. I don't want to have to deal with something like that on a long trip.Greg
