  • First time working on multiple carbs on the Trashboat

Well, I've worked on carbs before, lawnmowers....atvs...dirtbikes...jeeps...etc.

But I havent worked on a multiple carb system before.

I have 4 kits on order from partsnmore...

I already have a bucket of carb dunk, along with an air compressor to blow out the tiny crevices and holes..

Then I guess ill need to order a sync gauge kit...either gauge/mercury tube thingy...dunno which I want yet.

Then I also wanna get a color tune, it looks tons of fun to use, and seeing inside the chamber fascinates me!

Am I on track with my thoughts?

Don't soak those carbs in regular car type carb cleaner it will damage the butterfly shaft seals and any other small rubber bits. Yamaha makes a cleaner that can be mixed with water or gas ( I use gas, afraid to use water ) to clean the carbs with no damage. Taking the butterflys apart will ruin your days many days, very involved and even more involved to get them back together right.

Mercury is no longer used, I still have my set of mercury carb stix but back in the 70s I bought 8lb. of mercury and still have a little left. I'm thinking the gauges are the way to go, thinking about them for me.

Color tune is cool but reading the plugs works fine, why spend the money, IMO ?

      okay, so no dip..

      Good call

Maybe stick carb cleaner hose into all the orifices and blast away?

So carb sticks is the weird gauge with the 4 hose line looking things on a board?

I was thinkin of goin that route, because I really dont need to know numbers on the gauge, plus, the needles look like they vibe alot, at least in the videos I have found

        Pine Sol

You can try Pine Sol as an alternative to carb dip. I have read that many others have used it and I had a set of carbs that I had scrubbed down and sprayed thouroughly with carb cleaner. Soaked the carb bodies in Pine Sol over night and was amazed by the amount of crap in the pail.

Works well.................just don't be cheap and buy the generic stuff.........won't work.

Yes but mercury is no more, there are some you can make cheap, PM me and I can tell you all the different ideas.

The needles on the gauges may jump but still useable, think there are little valves you can put in line to reduce this ? The carb sticks jump too.

For cleaning, I have not tried the pine-sol route. I tried vinegar once and all I got was a smelly mess. If you break the bank down, a small Ultrasonic cleaner from HF will work for one or two at a time. Most just use carb cleaner with the nozzle, a small guitar string for poking into the small holes, wire brush, etc..

The colortune is a nice tool to see what is going on inside. I like it for getting you really close. But it does not get you to a final tune in my opinion. I would still look at your plugs as the final say in tuning the mixture.

If you have or get a set of vacuum sticks or gages, final tune by watching the vacuum and dialing the mixture screws to the best vacuum. Then sync the carbs together, then repeat those two steps once more.
Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt.

Morgan Carbtune is in my opinion the best option for a sync tool. Costs around $100 but is small and compact and works perfect. Colortune I tend to agree with lots of others and say it is kind of worthless.

Mercury is damn near fool proof. You do need to ensure that as the engine draws the columns upward, there is plenty left in the reservoir. If the mercury is rising and starts sucking air from the bottom, it will keep going up, over the top, and into the engine! Bad, toxic fumes! (don't ask)

Yeah I looked at the carb tune. I really did like it.

What is the difference between Morgan and Gunson? They sell basically the same things.

I do already have an ultrasonic unit I use for cleaning my weapons. I keep my guns totally spotless. So... That idea will work.

I found out that washing soda makes a GREAT ultrasonic cleaning solution. It basically makes the water simmer when you turn the unit on. Confirming that it's making the microscopic explosions on the surface like it's supposed to.

I got a call from my banks fraud department freaking out about a Canada charge from partsnmore .. How long should i expect the parts to take shipping from them?

Sparks, Partsnmore is an okay place to get some parts, but be wary of what you might get.
Scott ordered a carb kit for his '79 and you can see what he got here:
                      http://www.xs11.com/forum/showpost.p...36&postcount=9

While the jets might not work, the rest of the kit seemed to work great. (gaskets, needles, orings, etc.)

Don't use wash soda on the aluminum carbs.

The gunson colortune and the Morgan carbtun are completely different tools.

The colortune is a sparkplug with a clear window to let you see the color of the flame in the cylinder to adjust the fuel/air mix.

The carbtune is a replacement for the mercury sticks and it used to sync the carbs.

And I think they both have carb tunes as well.
