If the inside have not been tampered with it should work.
Is it rubbing on anything, well lubed ? I seem to remember having to have the XS750 kicker I put on my 79 in just the right position for it to work freely.
Once it was working freely I loved starting it with my right palm in front of friends keeping my thumb out of the way just in case of a backfire. My 79 started before I could hardly even move the kicker and starting with my hand just was so cool.76 XS650 C ROADSTER

If you have any crank left twards the bottom end, it might spring back to position for a better kick. At least that was the way my old Honda was...Skids (Sid Hansen)
