Oh I saw the two different starter gears. The one in question was the 86' 1100 with the newer style gear. It was totally hammered. The problem, was the teeth on the starter gear did not engage all the way with the flywheel. So the teeth were totally ate up. I think the cause of it was a weak starter motor. It wasn't throwing the gear out strongly enough. When you install the gear, make sure you grease anything that will help the starter throw the bendix out further so you don't have the same problem. If your starter motor sounds rough or weak, rebuild it or get a new one. Those damned gears are expensive.

When you say "moved front" do you mean you just rotated the rear fender forward and made new mounting holes? or is this somehow the front fender on the rear?
I apologize for the noob question.

          Rear fender moved front

I took a rear fender and moved it forward. I cut the frame...stuffed the ends of an old sissy bar into the end of the frame...mounted the fender to the sissy bar and bolted it all down.
Maybe this pic will help more.

Ah ok I see now. It's hard to tell from the picture but did you end up having to cut any off the top/forward section of the fender ?

The only cutting was on the plastic inner fender and the frame.

I assume you did move the TCI down more behind the battery box?

I started out thinking if I used a special inner fender I could still mount it to the plastic inner fender........but ended up putting the tci in the glove box.
