Oh I saw the two different starter gears. The one in question was the 86' 1100 with the newer style gear. It was totally hammered. The problem, was the teeth on the starter gear did not engage all the way with the flywheel. So the teeth were totally ate up. I think the cause of it was a weak starter motor. It wasn't throwing the gear out strongly enough. When you install the gear, make sure you grease anything that will help the starter throw the bendix out further so you don't have the same problem. If your starter motor sounds rough or weak, rebuild it or get a new one. Those damned gears are expensive.

Rear fender moved front
I took a rear fender and moved it forward. I cut the frame...stuffed the ends of an old sissy bar into the end of the frame...mounted the fender to the sissy bar and bolted it all down.
