  • Carbs done!

Well its take 3 weeks to get everything delivered, tear it all apart, clean everything and get it all back together but Im finally done. The carbs and airbox are both from Diverray. Rebuild kits for the gasket and idle screws from Georgefix on ebay.

I completely tore them apart, all the way down to shafts and seals. Replaced the butterfly screws and a few steel bolts on the covers all with stainless hex.

Painted with Rustoleum high temp engine paint. Not so much for the temp as much as for the fuel resistance.

When I got the carbs and airbox I was a bit disappointed with thinking I was going to need to get the airbox re-chromed due to all the little rust spots. Today I hit it with some Eagle One polishing stuff.

    Before-

    After-

Thanks everyone for putting up with all the questions while I got these back together.
    Nate

Ive run into some issues while trying to synch them.

First, after getting them in I realized the PO must have removed the vac advance. There was nothing hooked up to the old mystery carbs and where Im guessing its supposed to hook into behind the timing cover is a rubber plug.

Second, the PO had cut a hole in the oil breather area and put in what looks like an automotive breather cap. Now that I have a stock filter, I need to find something to plug up the old hole.

Now for the synching. I can get all 4 carbs syched but cant get it to idle lower than 2k with the idle knob backed all the way out. The idle mixture screws are a full 3 turns out. I started at 1.5 then to 3 but no difference.

Ideas on the vac advance and idle problems?

Just occurred to me, without figuring out how to hook up the vac advance, that fitting on number 2 is open. Will close that off and try again tomorrow after work.

Just went out and popped the timing cover off. The vac advance pot is in there with about 1.5 inches of hose and a plug. Why the hell would someone plug off the advance? Im really starting to hate the PO.

Also sometimes the clamps on the carb boots can hold the throttle open some if they are not positioned right.

                nice

now do mine lol, As far as I know mine have never been off the bike, runs good (unless were in the pouring rain). My boots that go between the carbs and the motor all all cracked but dont seem to leak. I know some day I will have to change them but plan on a carb rebuild and sync then

As far as the idle goes, I just went through this. You weren't properly bench synched before you started this process. You're trying to sync to a master that is dialed up too high. Take them off, bench sync them, and do it again.

Marty, If you read above, he did the sync with no advance hooked to #2, so it was sucking in air there and thus causing a higher idle.
Once he gets the vac advance hooked up, he should be able to dial it down then.

There should be no vacuum at the #2 carb port at idle. It's ported.

At idle the butterfly should cover the oraface inside.

Going out in a bit to try it again.

Pretty sure I know what went wrong.

I did do a bench sync, but when it came time to do a regular synch, I did it 1+2, 2+3, 3+4, then was all over. I misread the directions on the gauges. Will try again doing the pairs then synching them together.

Pretty mad at myself for this. Took me two hours to get those damn things in, now I gotta pull them back out
