the only method that's economically viable is Paypal, Steve. At present, one bearing, shipped to any destination worldwide, works out at 49 US dollars including airmail shipping by small packet rate. Two bearings travel at the same cost as one and the total works out at 88 US dollars including airmail shipping. Delivery takes from 7 to 10 days, usually and I always describe the contents as a low value gift.

Do you mean the wheel bearings? ie the bearings which are in the wheel itself? If so, then you will find that there is only one caged needle roller bearing in the wheel...it goes on the left side of the wheel. The bearing on the right side of the wheel is a standard ball bearing, not a needle bearing, available for only a few dollars just about anywhere.

No, you'll not be able to modify the wheel to take a different bearing. The left side needs a needle roller bearing and nothing else will do the job satisfactorily or for very long.

Ah, you mean the needle roller bearings actually in what people refer to as the final drive, or FD. ie the rear gearbox.

The bearings I have are only the left wheel bearing, I'm afraid. But, I could ask my international spies in Japan to see if they can get any redundant stock. It does exist; it's just a case of finding it.

BTW, what makes you think you need to replace them? Have you thought about buying a whole replacement final drive? They aren't particularly expensive, although heavy to ship to SA, I'd say. It might actually be cheaper to replace the FD than to buy the bearings, if I could find any....

If the final drive needle bearings are bad they most likely wiped out the surfaces of the final drive ring gear shaft and possibly the bearing bores in the aluminum final drive housing. Aside from the cost of shipping, you'd probably be better off buying a used final drive that's already set up instead of buying new bearings, then checking/double-checking/triple-checking the clearances and re-shimming as needed.

You could also think of it as a golden opportunity to try an '850 final drive.

If you're determined to pound your head against a brick wall and rebuild your final drive: once upon a time I did manage to find the commercial part numbers for all of the bearings. Some of them were very expensive -- buy two or three used drives for the price of one bearing kind of expensive. I didn't keep all of the part numbers so I'd have to tear apart a drive and try to look them up again.

<sigh> Was there a lot of metal in the final drive oil, Johan? If there was -- it's toast, don't spend another Rand on it!

If the oil was just dark or had water in it then put in some fresh oil and change it after a few thousand miles to make sure it stays clean with no metal in it.


Unless you've got somewhere around $300 USD to drop on new bearings and shims, just get another drive.

I'd go for a replacement FD, definitely. It's the same as if a middle gearbox failed...it would be easier and cheaper to replace it rather than repair it. Even if the required spares are available.

Oil in the FD can be dirty looking. It has a magnetic drain plug and there may be oily, powdery sludge on it. It doesn't mean the FD is no good though. I think possibly that you don't actually have a problem or need to do anything except drain the oil, clean the drain plug and put new oil in. Failed bearings would be very noticeable and absolutely obvious when the bike is run. If you're not experiencing any noises, vibration or whatever, I don't think you have a problem

Yeah, average is about 10 days. Usually, any slight delay is due to US Customs stopping an entire plane load of mail for inspection. The record to the USA is 6 days!
