Is the cover you speak of a round black plug in the sidecover or a rubber boot over a splined shaft?

I just found mine today on my special. If it is the spline covered with the rubber cap then the kickstarter is behind a nut right behind it on the frame. I was taking that nut loose to see what it was and there was my kickstarter. The nut goes through the hole on the kicker and the rest of the kicker is hidden up in there. Its really pretty neat.

        Hi John,
If your bike has slotted rotors it's a true '80 and that's the year they cheaped out on the kickstart pedal, the stowage for it and the shaft & gears in the tranny that made it work.
They were even too cheap to modify the molds to remove the lettering that said kickstart

Yup an 80 should just have the rubber set into the case with no kickstart shaft sticking out to put the emergency starter on. Like Fred says they cheaped out that year.

I was just thinking that if it's like the two SGs I have, one has a 78 engine and the other has a 79 engine and the both have the kickstart shaft with the rubber cover.

A lot can happen in 32 years.

Absolutely correct there Greg. My 81MNS has a 79SF motor in it.

If it has just a plug the kickstart mechanism isn't there. I don't think the XJ even has any of the gears in there. Like the LATE XSs.

The SG has part of what is needed. The kickstart parts from an older engine will slip right in there without too much trouble. The plug needs to be removed and a seal installed and all the other parts can be installed by just removing the clutch cover. The inner part of the rachet gear is already there.

Too bad even push starting won't even get it started if the battery is below 10.5 volts!
