Oh yeah that valve is badly bent! I had one that was sticking itermittantly and it was not obviously bent like that one. You have the tool now and with the head off, it is an opportune time to lap all of the valves. A complete gasket/seal kit for the head should have everything you need to do that. Heck, you might even think about replacing the cam chain while you're at it.Skids (Sid Hansen)

@natemoen, thanks, i would really appreciate it. its (i hope) the last piece of the puzzle to get my bike on the road. i'm getting tired of working on it!
@skids, what do you mean by lapping all the valves? and the bike has less than 9k miles on it, is a cam chain replacement really necessary?
@Glowe, thanks man! if i can't find one on here i'll definitely get one there. the cheapest one i found previously was $80i could get a whole new head for a bit more from the scrapyard.
1979 xs special, just finished the top end rebuild and then i still have lots of work.

Would NOT do either one, specially not any valve lapping!81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.Comment

I may have a valve as well. I have an XS of parts here so I would need the measurements to compare so could send the right part. No guarantees but I might have that valve.2-79 XS1100 SF

I didn't realize this was a low milage engine. Yeah, you can forego the replacement of the cam chain!Well, you should at least check the other valves while the head is off. Check them to see how fast solvent leaks through the seated vlaves. As far as the new valve, I would lap that one. Lapping is done with compound, while turning the valve in the seat. Sure the valve is ground (or should be) but it needs to mate to the seat. I rarely disagree with Motoman, but I do in this case.

Looking at the condition of that "9,000 mile" valve, I would lap them myself. As Skids stated, it is a process of putting some "lapping" (grinding) compound on the valve seat, put your valve in bare, and put a lapping stick on the valve (basically a stick with a suction cup on the end) and manually twist the valve grinding the seat and valve face to match each other. IF there is carbon build up on the valve seat of the valve face it will help them seat better.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!
