I got my bike off craigslist about ten days ago. Finally got to change all the fluids today. The center drive plug came out covered in shavings no oil came out and it was full of oil. I poked a screw driver int the hole and knocked a load of shavings loose and then the oil came out. The shavings were actually were. Plugging and drain hole. So I re filled it with gear oil and ran it one the center stand through a couple gears and to my suprise no noise or grinding just smooth. I took it out and ride Around my 4 acre yard a few times. Seemed good so I hit the road went about 3 miles till I got cold "I'm in indiana" it seems good. What do you guys think. With that many shavings you'd think it would act funny our at whine. By the way that was my first ride on a yamaha street. I have owned a few other brands but nothing with this kind if power. Smooth as silk and she arches her back when you romp on her. I'm in love.

Shavings??? That's not good.... For peace of mind as well as safety, I'd personally replace it. You don't want that seizing on you at any speed above a fast walk. Middle drives aren't that hard to find, and far cheaper than the possible 'other' damage you'd see if it locks up.Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

By the by, there is another drain plug that drains the part of the main case that houses the input side of the middle drive. When you get it out, you will see the oil in there.
You have to crawl under the bike and look up to find the plug. It is in a recessed hollow in the case.
You want to get it cleaned out before you reinstall a new drive, so that you don't contaminate the fresh oil. CZ
