  • wiring

got more of the wiring done almost done!!!! started working on my tank (sanding filling in small dents and filling in holes for the badges). I have decided to strip it down to bare metal since, when i sanded the areas that i am gonna fill, there were at least six layers of paint going from silver to white to black to yellow to maroon to black again. i will take some pics tomorow and post them.

    • battery box addition

so i was helping my neighbor clean out behind their garage and i found this piece of metal and thought i could use it on the project

so i thought about it and the only thing i needed was something to help hold the battery in place.
      before

      after

so what do you think, i think it turned out pretty cool, just needs paint

      • Seat Testing

Here's a novel idea to see if your seat has enough spring action...
After riding it hard for several days and miles, when you stop to take a whiz, always use a white paper towel to whiz thru and if you don't see red, it's cushey enough, but if you do see red, you might wanna re-think the seat set-up
Just enjoy being young, cause when you get old and brittle, you'll end-up paying for them younger days...don't ask how I know
The build looks great BTW...wish I were young enough to enjoy something like that again.

the seat thats on the bike now was just something that i made just to get the mounting brackets and springs attached. the one that i am going to use has closed cell foam padding and covered in leather. I wouldnt think of riding with that seat on it its not even comfortable just sitting on it. I have seen some guys with the seats with no padding on it, but there is no way i could do it.

Yeah, I understand, but when you get the final seat on it, then follow the above directions to see if it is cushy enough

i do thank you for that piece of advice, and i will watch out for that. this bike is not going to be used on long rides (the longest might be 3 hours, with a ton of stops). it will be used to scoot around town on and maybe back and forth to work (20 min. away), but i do appreciate the concearn.

so far it has been an awsome. this is my first build and wont be my last. everyone i know is tired of hearing about it. i get really excited about every little thing that i have done to this bike. the bike is slowly evolving in fornt of my eyes and i am loving every minuite of it. the closer if get to finishing it the more excited i get. thanks again. one thing that i love about this site is that everyone on here sees and understands how much time and work i am putting into this build, even though not everyone likes what i have done to the bike, they can all appreciate the hard work involved in what i am doing and the fact that i am seeing it through to the end, and putting one of these great bikes on the road instead of rusting away in someones back yard. i know that alot of people here have seen people start these kind of projects, then either lose intrest of find out that it is alot of work and just give up thus ending the life of a great bike, but i hope i have showed everyone that i will see this through to the end (which is right around the corner).

                  • wiring

worked on the wiring for a while today, my buddy that was gonna help wasnt able to make it, i started by myself. i got a little bit done, but spent most of the time looking at the wiring diagram and looking at the harness to make sure i know what was what and making sure i know what every thing was. I did get most of the electrical put into the faux oil tank, but have to make a few adjustment here and there to make sure everything workes out just right. i will do some more work tomorrow and take some pics. wish me luck, i think i have bit off more than i can chew with the wiring, but i if i take my time and do one thing at a time i belive i will be ok. it will take longer than i had planed, but at least by doing it a little at a time i can make sure everything is done right. i am so tempted to just rush through it and get this thing on the road, but i know that if i do something will be missed, and i dont want any problems later down the road.

                    • little more done

got a little more done on the wiring done today just a few little things. i spent most of the day working on my tank. I stripped it down to bare metal. I used a spray on stripper, but it took forever since the tank had so many layers. it did do a good job tho. once i got the tank stripped i could really see how many little dings there were on the tank, so i got out the bondo and did a light skim over the entire tank to fill in all the little imperfections. worked nicely. started with 80 grit and worked my way to 350 grit and it got the tank really smooth, real sleek looking with the badges filled and all the dents gone. I have it primed and ready to wet sand to get it ready for paint. camera died but i will post a pic later to show how the tank turned out. I think it turned out great i cant wait to get some paint on it.

here is a pic of my tank before i started working on it, not bad but needs some work

after stripping to bare metal then bondo, primer, and first coat of paint, with alot of sanding in between.

                        wiring before

now with everything in the faux oil tank

                        • Just wondering, are you putting gauges on it?
                          Speedo/Tach?
I've got a special (round one) speedo (and braket) lying around (the tach is shot)
I'll snap a pic of it and post it up here and if you want it, you can have it.
Maybe you can modify the bracket to hold just the speedo and not worry about the tach.

I guess you're not too worried about the VA state inspection.
You can always go with the antique plates and skip the inspection.
