    work for the weekend

this weekend i plan on making and installing the fender struts, mount the fake oil tank to house the electrical componants, get the wireing done, install starter button and kill switch, reinstall front brakes, and maybe start her up and take for a test run (if all goes well). I know that i have seen a link on here some where for a simplified wiring diagram, i think it was on the british site, but cant seem to find it.

Lookin' good! Ya planning on running support struts to the rear fender or maybe a sister bar?

Here's a little different take on rear view mirrors...

nice looking bike and yes that is a different take on the mirrors pretty cool, and yes i am running fender support struts to the rear fender. thanks. the funny thing about this project the things that seem to take the longest and i am the most proud of most people wont even notice. I spent about two hours this afternoon fabricating a bracket to fasten the gas tank to the frame. i will post some pics tomorrow. and once that bracket is finished no one will ever see it or know how long it took to figure the whole thing out, you will understand when i post the pics (camera is at work). thanks again for all the comments. i am hopeing that i get alot done this weekend as long as the little stuff doesnt take as long as things did this afternoon. the onething that sucks about this build is that my family is tired of hearing about it, but this site has helped so much, because it is like everyone on this site is there with me, and have the same passion for bikes as i do.

          blank stares

Yeah once you've been at it awhile the eye's of the family glaze over and they get that far off look whenever the bike gets mentioned. Glad you can get your inspiration from here and of course the interested input from others. Sometimes the family just doesn't understand

            the tank mock up

to make the tank mount work with the hardtail i had to relocate the mounting brackett. first to give it a cleaner look i cut and rewelded the the tank mount on the rear bottom of the tank.

then i had to mount a tab for the tank to bolt to.

it took some time to figure out how i could bolt the frame to the tank instead of bolting the tank to the frame. Meaning that the with the regular mount you bolted the tank down from the top, and with my set up i have to bolt it from the bottom. this is basiclly how i did it .

              fender strut

got the fender struts done today, they were made out of 1/2 inch round bar with 1/2 tubing at the ends to mount to fender. they were hand bent with heat then cooled to help them retain there shape better, did the slight curve to make it around the rear brake caliper. the only thing that sucked about this was that my drill broke so i used an old hand crank drill to make the mounting holes in the fender

getting closer and closer, i am itchin to get this thing on the road.

                my drill

this is the drill i used all day

                more fender struts

tank with the hidden mount works great. also mounted the bikes on/off switch (to the right of the seat mount) and the hole on the left will be for the starter button

tomorrow i wil install the starter button and mount the fake oil tank, and maybe start on the wiring

                  not much done

the only thing that got done today was installing the starter button

starter button on the left and kill switch on the right.

                  with seat on

                    oil tank

fabricated and welded the brackets to hold the "fake" oil tank, which will house all of the electronics.

                    oil tank installed

now time to tackle the wiring!!! FUN, FUN, FUN......

                    • hardtail

i forgot to mention early on in my posts, that i used the part of the frame that i cut out to fabricate the hardtail so that i was using the exact same metal to help to make for stronger welds. and all the tubing was the exact same diameter. the only other metal that i actually had to buy for the hardtail was the smaller diameter tubing that i used inside all of the weld joints to give the welds ever more strength. just thought some people might like to know that

                      • The more info the better! Thanks for taking the time to photo and document the process. I have, and use, a similar brace (it's not really a drill) as often as possible. I like feeling the drill bit dig into the material, ya know what I mean?

So now ya get to start fooling with the wiring? Yer a braver man than I when it comes to electrickery. Good luck...

i thought people would like to see the little stuff, that for the most part would otherwise be overlooked. alot of the things that i am doing once it is all done will not be noticed ( the tank mount, and alot of little things), but they will help to clean things up and make it a on of a kind bike. this being my first build i have had to do alot of research, and alot of time tring to make everything work and look good at the same time. It took me hours to figure out how to do the tank mount. the main thing that i want to show people is that you can have a nice custom bike and not have to take out a second morgage to do it. most everything on this bike i have done myself with the exception of my carbs. I got my carbs from a guy in newport news, va. by the name of larry Mcbride. some people might know him as spiderman. at one time he was the fastest man on two wheels. really great guy and willing to help with anything. anyway i will start the wiring sometime this weekend, camera in hand.

                            • fear of wiring

ok so i had the whole day to work on the bike, thought i was going to work on the wiring, but i had some more welding to do and had to do it today since i need to give my brother his welder back on monday. so what i got done today was, weld on the mini sissy bar.

also i sat on the bike to see how comfortable my riding position was gonna be with my seat and handlebar set up. the seat position was great, but the drag bars made me lean a little to far forward. so i sat there with my arms out trying to figure where the handlebars needed to be for the most comfortable riding position. after sitting for a while i figured that if the handlebars were just up and back a little it would make for a more comfortable ride. so i came up with a 3 inch riser was needed. so i made one out of a pair of old handlebars i had laying around.

then i worked on the fake oil tank to get it ready to put the wires in it. so i drilled a hole in it an installed a rubber gasket inside the hole to keep the wires from getting cut on the metal.

you cant see in the pic but i also welded the nuts on the inside of the tank so that it can be bolted to the tabs i already welded to the frame. so this is how it looks as of now.

i am still debating on color. i know that i want it mostly black with a little crome, but i was thinking of old school pen stripes as well. any suggestions on color or some type of design. i am trying to keep it looking old school. thanks

                              • wiring start

i started some of the wiring this afternoon. i got the starter button, and kill switch wired up and ready to go. most of my time was spent studying two different wiring diagrams that i have one is the original and the other was a simplified one that i got from the UK site. All i am basically doing with the wiring is eliminating as much stuff that i can without totally butchering the harness. also i am just moving some things around, such as relocating the starter button, and kill switch. I am also thinking of moving the key switch. I like to have most of switches somewhat hidden to give it a really simplified look without getting rid of alot just hiding them. I will take some pics tomorrow as i will start putting the wiring into the fake oil tank.
