  • Carbs d@#m pos!!

!st OK, I hate to ask this kind of question again, but can someone put a Voodoo hex on a mans carbs Just ran the bike for a min. Went to take the K&N filter out to clean it and about two TBL spoons of gas in the airbox and 1/2 qt high on oil / and now gas mix in case again A run down of the carbs, OEM 79SF, rebuilt 5 times in the last 6 months, new 920 tiped float needles, new float needle to carb body housing gaskets and tested for leaks. Brass floats, no dents, all hot water tested, no bubbles, all set with a micrometer and stop / open tang set to min. movement, all burrs sanded on float pillers and shafts pollished with no binding, octy in place and tested, carbs bench tested for leaks and none, zero, nadaa, prim caped at pectcock, petcocks completly rebuilt with new kits turned to OFF as soon as bike is shut off every time, new inline filters, Fuel cap vent R/I, cleaned, working fine. Over 40 years experance rebuilding carbs on everything from small motors to motorcycles to drag race cars, even the notorious Pontiac Tri power carbs, hundreds of carb rebuilds and NEVER had a single one not work perfect after I rebuilt it TILL NOW!!!!!!!! I thought the octy is supposed to stop fuel overflow, unless you left it on prime. Maybe some crap got past the fuel filter?

I had a float sticking on the float pin. I had them apart 20 times too. I hope they're all fixed now.

        Prim

Prim is blocked off and the octy is working, tested it after rebuild, and checked it again latly That is why I am so dammed Got to be leaking while running or just after from residual fuel in lines as I shut the petcocks off as soon as I shut the bike off everytime

How did you block off the prime? You say the Octy is working perfectly but the prime is blocked off? How did you do that? How would you know that the Octy is working if it is blocked off? Yes residual fuel can do the deed but, NOT if it is half quart over full as you say. Something is missing in this puzzle.

Sounds like you do have one that is not floating correctly or properly shutting off the fuel. If you turned the petcocks off, and the octy is in place, and both are workign then fuel would be very hard pressed to make it to the carbs in any quantity.

I would pull the carbs and check those floats to see if there is any fuel in them, water test is not the end all 100% certain test.

Another option, possibility as stated is crap making it past your fuel filter. Especially if you let the tank get low and went to Reserve.

I do know the feeling and it is a PITA. I have a set of 78-79 carbs right now that no matter what I do one seems to seep fuel around the bowl gasket. Driving me nuts. I just let them sit a while till I am no longer frustrated.
Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

                  Petcocks

I have capped the prim nippels at both petcocks and rerouted the lines to go from the on/ res/ off nipples to two inline filters then to the carbs, removeing the prime lines altogather. I bench tested the octy when I rebuilt it by attaching a fuel sorce, then sucking on the vac line, fuel flowed, stopped sucking fuel stopped flowing, did the same thing on the bike attached to the tank with out lines into a can, worked fine and vac line is hooked to the intake manafold now

                    Trim

I trimed all 4 gaskets on all 8 sides in the bowles and cheakes for clearance of all 4 floats before assembly, about a popsickel stick thickness of clearance on all 16 sides of floats (insides and outsides of each)

If the lines go from the taps to the filters, then to the carbs, how is the octy supposed to work?

I guess i am wondering why you still have the Octy in that case? No need for it at all in that configuration. At the risk of sounding really stupid are you sure you capped the prime and not the other?

The petcocks are on the correct L/R sides and everything is OEM, I capped the front nipples on both after putting fuel in the tank and turring to prime, and that was the nipples the gas came out of.
