the octy is a vacuum operated diaphram that allows fuel to flow when the motor is creating vacuum and the petcock is in the run/res position. its on top of #2 carb. fuel doesnt flow when the motor is off.the carbs on these bikes are known to leak after sitting unattended for a while. this year i drained the carbs.
i had a sticky float and my air box filled with fuel and ruined my air filter. what year is your Special Jason? nice SH Gary. dont see too many that color.

She's a 79SF, and I've had her for about 10 days. I found the octy (which I identified as such by the fact that it vaguely resembles an octopus) when I pulled the carb bank to tear them down for cleaning.

            79sf

Mine is a 79SF also, the octy (when working properly) can save the day, but it does not do anythhing if set to "prime" Never, leave your bike on "prime" if not running

I was VERY disappointed with the 78 E models airbox, because the keeper clips wound-up in the foam. I had to cut the filters with a Gin-soo (sp?) knife while prying the airbox open a bit. Let me tell you that foam is tough. I was quite pissed.

                Octy

IMHO, leave the octy in place, you can check it by sucking on the vac line and seeing if gas flows, then stops when you stop sucking. It is an easy rebuild if needed and comes with the dia. in many petcock kits. Way better then sending us pictures of your bike after it burned to the ground, or asking how to replace the crank bearings because gas got in your oil l
