my 81sh is in need of an air filter replacement. i found one constructed of reuseable foam called a Uni Filter for a better price for a paper element OEM replacement. i have a Kirker 4/1 exhaust i purchased 10yrs ago because it stated no carb rejetting necessary. my bike runs great with the Kirker and has a paper OEM air filter. but will i need to rejet when using a foam filter. Uni Filter has no stats other than to oil it before installation. im sure theres less air restriction thus more intake air. any help will be greatly appreciated. ive had the carbs on/off and made adjustments several times after sitting with 10yrs of bad fuel and finally have them where i want them. then again, i wouldnt mind a reuseable better airflow, better fuel mileage, air filter, but without having to rejet. someone please set me straight.

Just keep an eye on your plugs after you put it in. You could always be on the edge of running lean and the filter just might put it over the top. Better safe than sorry.Nathan

A problem I had with a Uni foam filter a while back:
The carbs weren't set up perfectly and the engine would like to backfire thru the carbs once in a while. Several months later I went to remove the air filter and it had caught on fire and melted. Only downside to these foam filters is they can melt and cause a mess in the air box if there is a problem. JMHO, YMMV.2H7 (79) owned since '89

I have them in both bikes. They work just fine for me.
The one in the okieSPECIAL I've had in there for 3 years now. Clean and re-oil about twice a year. I just use spray lube to oil it.Greg

I can also vouch for the UNI, had mine about 6 yrs and as long as you keep it oiled, it won't deteriorate...................+1 on the UNI and have had for same amount of time. Careful of buying one of those NOS originals with the foam. Saw a thread here where a member had the foam come apart from its age and long shelf life.......JAT.81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.

Uni products
I've got UNI in one bike & K&N in another. can't tell difference in performance. Like the UNI.
Also anyone looking for pod filters should look at the UNI website. Theirs are much superior to EMGOs & don't cost that much more.Tom Clisham

thanx everyone. i guess ill be putting it in since i was just notified my order cant be cancelled. i feel i made the right choice after reading all the replys. what oil are you guys using for the filter. i have some K&N red oil spray for thier filters. will that be sufficient or do i need to soak it in motor oil? im hoping ill have to hang on when i grab a handfull.
Marty, great to hear you got your leaking carbs straight, was reading your post last night. ive had that among the other typical carb issues.Last edited by mjpxs11sh; 12-15-2011, 02:28 PM.Max

K&n
I would guess the K&N spray would be fine, but it should come with instructions as to what kind of oil is compatabule with their foam, I would check to be sure

UNI has their own oil, but you could use motor oil. If you do, get a heavy weight oil so it sticks. The K&N stuff should be fine, too. I bet it's pretty sticky stuff, eh?
Wring it out when you're done oiling it. If it's too wet, it'll drip on the motor. DAMHIKIJKFormer owner, but I have NO PARTS LEFT!
