Pine sol has worked for me and others, along with other products. I didnt get sparkling clean on the outsides, but the insides and parts were useable. I used a much larger tub and completely immersed carbs. It took four quarts of genuine pinesol. I think the generic stuff thats called pine cleaner, may be adulterated with who knows what.

I have had real good luck with the yammie cleaner, half and half in water in a large coffee can, soaking three, then the next day turn over and soak the other end after washing everything up well with hot water.

All three of those little tiny holes near the throttle plate, MUST FLOW, and also the tiny hole in the back of the bowl, MUST flow thru to spray or air. I used cheapo carb cleaner in a spray can to actually clean the metal thru the jets and jet mounts. I found that hi pressure air prolly works just as well for that though.

Granted, they weren't completely submerged, but only 20% stuck out, and I flipped them for another day, I used the real pine sol stuff too, not sure why my results weren't better, I'm not just looking for "usable", I want clean, not expecting show shine, I'll detail them after, but should have done a better job than the results I got, maybe a bad batch of pine sol, who knows. Anyone use mineral spirits or paint thinner with any good results, or bad effects? How about vinegar, it's an alkaline?? Hell, at this point I'd soak them in mouthwash if I thought it would be an improvement, at least they would be minty fresh....

Hi old skool,
if you want them really, really clean, tear 'em down completely, put everything in a fine-mesh wire basket and set them in a trichloroethylene vapor degreaser.
They'll come out "shining like an outhouse door on a frosty morning"
One drawback, that stuff eats elastomers so the teardown has to include the butterfly shaft seals.

I guess I want my cake and eat it too, hoping for a decent clean without the full teardown, and nothing that will damage the internals. I'll hand polish afterwards, just don't want to tear them back off once on the bike, with the exception if I have to do any jet mods, looks like I'm going to be doing the dreaded "clean three times" curse before I use them. lol.....acetone??

Hi old skool,
acetone works to clean the externals but what you really need is to clean the internals and that takes pressure.
Get a pressure can of any reputable carb cleaner and shove that little red stinger down every hole and spritz until it squirts out of every other hole.
Remember the smaller the hole, the easier it gets blocked and that means the enrichening circuit needs special attention.

To add to it, it has to be the Original Pine Sol, cannot be the lemon scented, ingredients are different.

I think the title says it all, if you want sparkling even with just pinesol. If in doubt,try what fred says too, Ive never tried acetone, but I wouldnt want it touching anything plastic or rubber. My buddy melted some perfectly good plastic with acetone.

By the way, vinegar, is by official latin name, aceto aceto acid, not a base, but who knows whether it would do those carbs the good.

If you dont want to tear them completely apart but want them shiny, see the title. I have heard of soda blasting with carbs, if there is any residual, some wag said it just dissolves in the rinse water, and soda is a base if thats what your thinking is going to help.

I think you, like me, are caught up in what my college math teacher said is a typical phenomena, quote, Tom, you havnt done enough homework yet, unquote. haha

$30 bucks a spray can...ouch, but if it last as much as 8 years for motorcycle applications like they suggest, I guess it's not that bad.

Alright, trying another solution, similar to simple green, an industrial cleaner from harbor freight, diluted with hot water and using a heavy duty aquarium pump for agitation, going to check on it every 15 mins, and if ok, increase to every 30. Do a complete water rinse afterwards. Will post these results with pics. Tried it for a while as a straight solution on a piece of test aluminum, with not much results, but a lot of these chemicals react with the addition of water added. Almost looks like another generic version of pine sol, time will tell.
