Only the Specials have the octy; the standards have that feature built into the petcocks.
You need to block off the 'prime' outlet on your petcocks when removing the octy... some just connect the two petcocks together or put a short piece of hose on with a bolt 'plug'. For a bit more elegant solution, look here: http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=32980
Then simply connect the fuel line directly to the carbs...Last edited by crazy steve; 11-27-2011, 06:24 PM.Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

Steve,
I beg to differ. I removed the octy from my G and J and had to connect vacuum lines from two of the intake manifolds to each of the petcocks, and then ran my fuel lines to the opposite side intakes of the carbs. This allowed me to install inline fuel filters without the risk of kinking the lines. I also have this setup on my J.1980G Standard, Restored

The XJ would have the octy, as it shared petcocks with all the Specials. But if your standard had one, it was installed by a PO. I suspect that somebody swapped carbs and didn't pull it off the carb bank....Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

My G has those 'transitional' carbs where the pilot jet tubes are plugged with rubber stoppers. It was manufactured at the end of 1979 also.
Don't know if that has any bearing on it. This bike was bone stock when I got it from a co-worker who was the original owner. It only had 14k miles on it.1980G Standard, Restored

You've got me curious... how was that plumbed? Were both petcocks and the octy connected to vacuum sources, or just the octy? If it was the latter, then the only way it would work would be if the petcocks were set on 'prime', but that defeats your 'reserve' function. If both, then you simply had two shut-off points.
Somewhere along the line, somebody swapped carbs or made a point of installing that for whatever reason, unless somebody grabbed the wrong bits out of a bin on the production line and it made it past QC. Neither the manuals or the parts fiche show those on a standard, only the Specials and XJ.Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

Back on thread (and I get off thread more then most) If you have the octy, and are going to remove (which I don't recomend) it and you have the special style petcocks (no vacuum lines to them) Cap off the prim at the petcock with a line cap, $0.25 at any auto parts store (you wont need it as run / resurve become a prime) Next, run the two remaining lines tward the carbs two fuel input feeds. I would put a 4 way or two "T's" so both petcocks have the same fuel feed at all times JAT. This would also be a good time to install a couple of in line filters with all the extra room you have. Just make sure you turn off the fuel everytime you turn off the bike, the needles may work, and they may fail and poor gas in your oil

I removed the octy and just used the tee fitting to run the main and the prime into the carbs with no problems. And plugged the vacuum with a hose and bolt. Love these bikesKeep the shiny side up

i bought fuel end caps, not vacuum caps, you are right, there is a diff. Still $0.25 each
