I know someone was saying using metal hardware on a fairing windshield is bad but I can't find it. What is wrong with using metal bolts to hold the windshield on a fairing?

If the windshield is attached with metal bolts and blind nuts, and something hits the windshield, then the nuts/bolts tear-out of the fairing (I have one that that happened to). Plastic bolts will shear-off can be easily replaced.
In my case I had the windshield mounting area replaced from another fairing using plastic welding. Basiclly using 2 junk fairings to make one good one.Pat Kelly

Besides that, the metal bolts don't have any 'give' in them and you can develop cracks radiating out from the mounting points. If you put some sort of rubber grommets around the bolts they'll work.Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

Unfortunately, the plastic/nylon screws and bolts from the hardware store are NOT the same quality as ones you can get from Vetter's web site. Oh, they'll work, but WILL pull apart from vibration and load forces. The set from Vetter, being of better quality uses metal nuts on the screws and can be pulled fairly tight. Hardware store quality nylon screws and bolts should be considered a temporary fix at best. To answer the question, the real reason for the plastic bolts is rider safety. If you crash, and your body hits the windshield, you want the windshield to break away. The plastic bolts and the clips are an intentional weak point that will allow the shield to break away if your body hits it from behind, instead of holding it fast, creating a guillotine.1980 XS850SG - Sold

I have had pretty good luck from the nylon bolts from Lows. Yeah, sometimes they do break, but they are cheap and available. PS, the standard bolts up high, left and right, are metal and are installed through a metal U-clip.Skids (Sid Hansen)
