Wouldn't it be sweet, if there was a simple F.I. solution that would replace our aging carb technology? A system that would easily install and just work.
The primary reason there is not, is the cost. The F.I. options I have found cost more than any of us paid for our bikes.
I have a F.I. project that I have been working on for a couple of years, on and off. As long as my carbs worked, I did not spend much time on it. Recently, by carbs have started to act up (after 105K miles) and it has me looking at my F.I. project again.
Unfortunately it won't be cheap. There is over $300 just in 4 injectors and a fuel pump. Not to mention ECU, TPS, regulator, sensors, and throttle bodies. All custom stuff (which means $$). Who is going to pay $1200-$1500 (or more) on F.I. for their XS/XJ?
How "turn key" will it be? For a lot of XS'ers, F.I. is more complicated and possible less reliable the carbs. At least when the carbs start to act up, the bike is still able to make it home. There are components of an electronic F.I. system that could leave the bike dead. And forget about going to your local bike shop for part and/or help.
On the positive side, the benefits are significant. More low-end torque, improved fuel economy, better throttle response, and simpler to adjust (if you have a laptop and aren't afraid to use it).
The current effort to F.I. an XS is great. I applaud your efforts. You’re doing it. Doing is always better than talking (or writing). The thought of me not having a F.I. XS when somebody else does, may be enough motivation to give it a shot.
So, do I F.I. my XS? I would like to. Or, do I buy a new bike and spend the time riding. Anybody see the dilemma here? There is obviously no money in it, but it sure would be cool! Stay tuned (I know, I know, heard that before!)
