I'm not entirely sure that there are not bent valves. I haven't had it running other than the very brief start last night, but in all the time that I've spent cranking on the starter, I havent heard anything that would indicate that.

If it ran smoothly on all 4 chances are good the valves are not bent. That's not 100%, but chances are good. If you have access to a compression tester it would be worth doing a compression test.

It's really cool when they start for the first time, even if it's just the first time with a new engine in them.

You said it. I threw up my arms in the victory "V" when she fired off. I'll hafta do the compression test. I can't keep her running for long enough to tell if she's firing all four or not. I've got the carbs apart right now trying to fix this problem.

I've found the easiest way to do the compression test is to have all 4 plugs out and the tester in one hole. Less load on the starter this way and you don't have to hassle with pulling the plugs as you go.
Also, it was way easier to do it with the carbs out, rather than trying to hold the throttle wide open.

ps. take your time on those carbs. dirt is the enemy. keep the parts matched with which ones they came out with. Read and re-read the tech tips on these things. (it will only help in the long run)

          Ask lots of quesitons.

you don't have to take the carbs apart from the bank to get them clean.
