Pickup coils are located on left side under cover. They tell the TCI unit to fire the coils. The wires break and they stop working. There is a fixit thread on here about them. Check for pickup coil wire repair and you can see what needs to be done. Easy job to test and fix.

Well, I tried the easy fix by replacing the TCI but the problem still exists. geuss I'll try the pickup wire fix when I get some more time. Took a visual look at them and they seem fine but I know looks can be deceiving.
Thanks guys for all the help. It's greatly appreciated.

You can't see the broken wires, you need an ohm meter to tell. When you hook up the meter, move the wires and watch the meter. If it jumps around, you have broken wires.

BTW, use an analog meter, the digital ones are too slow to react.

While there are digital meters that can be used for this type of troubleshooting, the normal person is not likely to have one of them, as they are on the pricey side of things. Even many electronic techs who have need of that type of troubleshooting will just get an analog meter to go with their digital rather than spend the money on a digital that can emulate an analog meter (as I said, you can find them, but unless you use them a lot it's not cost effective, and even then it's often more cost effective to just get an analog meter anyways, so that keeps them rare even so).

                      coil

would that not be a bad coil?if you swap wires and get spark only from one coil.
Quote:Had spark on cyl. 1 and 4. 2 and 3 had nothing. Swapped the wires feeding the coils and 2 and 3 worked but 1 and 4 had nothing.End of quote:
                      ???
Just thinking mabe you could try some one close to you to see if you could try a set of coil swap test. (BA80)
                      Good luck.

Well I was finally able to mess with the bikeand couldn't find any bad wires. Tried a different TCI and did not fix it. Now I have no spark out of either coil using both TCI's. Also when I turned the ignition on I heard a sparking sound. Upon further inspection I noticed the spark plugs were getting an intermittant spark.?????????

                            which ones are those?
Engine left side-cover that has YAMAHA on it. Pull on each wire every inch holding other end.........if sheathing stretches, you found a break.........likely culprit........

Unscrew spark-plug end caps, corrosion found, cut back quarter inch and re-assemble.

It was sparking with just the key on. I Hadn't even touched the start button yet. I put the key in. Turned it to on and then it started sparking?
