I checked my Haynes manual last night and there's no mention at all of those pointers on the cam sprockets. Presumably, that's why I wasn't looking for them when I did my shims. Hopefully, it doesn't matter. I did 90mph last night (what with that and not wearing a helmet the other night, I'm getting to be quite a tearaway). No problems with anything. No extra noise from the swapped CCT. Nothing from the cam sprockets, so I presume I either got them lined up by fluke, or those pointer things don't matter.XS1100F 1980 European model. Standard. As far as I was able to see by moving the gears around in a spare-parts engine this afternoon: the pointers on the camshaft gears don't matter. They might be used in another engine but they're decorative in the XS11 engine.
I believe the word 'engraving' is a very generous superlative when used to describe the rough caricatures of useful images in the Yamaha manual that implies a durability and clarity that is not present. Maybe someone who once saw a camera as a small child stayed for half an hour in a motel room in the same section of the city as the print shop. Maybe.-- Scott

Of course I dont know for sure, but if the holes in the sprockes line up with the holes in the cams regardless of the location of those marks on the sprockes,, and if there is an even number of teeth, it couldn't matter. Symetry is symetry!Skids (Sid Hansen)

Thanks for the tips guys. Got the bike all back together and went for a test ride late last night. No problems, started right up and idled smooth. Rode a few miles to the gas station and started seeing smoke off no.1 header. Took a look and oil was leaking out my valve cover. Noticed the corner cover bolt was half way out of the hole! Don't think I missed it when I was torquing them down, I think it must of loosened from heating up. I don't know what the torque is for those bolts but I used 7.5ft/lbs. Wiped down the oil and snugger it back up with my allens I cary and went home to re torque them. Found most of them loosened up some from expanding... rode around today and no more leaks, runs good. Once I get the aluminum half moon cam plugs made and ready to install Im adjusting valve clearance. Excited to see what kind of clearances it has and how much better it will run.'79 XS11 F

[QUOTE=WMarshy;332022]Lol since you asked I used 20 ft/lbs. I broke one of my tensioners b/c I over torqued it.
Thank you for the help, but it does look very much like a drain plug.1979 XS 1100 Special - Nicknamed "MONSTER"
