OK, I guess I have been sleeping through threads or something. What is the zip tie method?

I also have a spare (brand new) valve shim tool.
If you can get the whole works from someone else it would be easier for you, but if you need these send a PM.2-79 XS1100 SF

Well I ordered floats from mikes xs, along with other stuff. I also have shims on the way for my adjustment. I just hope everything is here before the weekend, so I can get it done before my weekend to work1981 xs1100 venturer... Finally runs

I got the valves shimmed and everything back together. They are not perfect (within .002) but I couldn't get it any closer. I did a compression check (carbs off) after I finished and 1,3,4 are 125ish +/-2 and 2 is 80, dam!! I poured oil down the spark plus hole and compression increased, so it needs rings right?
The carbs are still out of the bike because I was waiting on my floats and shaft seals. I figured that after the whole deal with the busted float tower I would make them as close to new as possible. I do not want to be tearing into these again, except upgrades.
I hope to have it running this weekend or by Tuesday. Than all I have to worry about is freeing up my rear caliper piston and rebuilding that. I will still have to change all of the fluids before I take it out on the road for its first voyage.1981 xs1100 venturer... Finally runs

Get some miles one the bike before you worry about the compression. 9 out of 10 times the rings will free up in the first 500-1000 miles and be good as new.Nathan

So..... put new floats in the carbs measured to .90 and these dam things are still overflowing. I have my tank off and I am using a plastic tank that hangs from above. Am I doing something wrong? Any help would b great! I am about to throw this whole *uckin bike in a junk yard.1981 xs1100 venturer... Finally runs

Try tapping on the bowls while they are filling. Sometimes the plastic floats drop too far when the bowls are empty and the needle valve gets cocked in the seat. There is a second float tang near the float post to prevent this from happening. Another cause would be aftermarket float bowl gaskets being just a tad too big and catching on the floats. If this is the case they can be trimmed down a bit. Third thing is the seat O-rings could be toast. Fourth thing could be debris getting caught in the needle/seat... you get the idea.2H7 (79) owned since '89
