Yeah that's the camp I fall in for engine break in, but everyone has their own methods. I actually had a guy at a stoplight scold me for not following proper procedure for break in once.

That's ok, I don't care what others think. If I did, I would be riding a Harley. I ride what I like the looks and riding style of, and I enjoy working on it, even if I get frustrated sometimes when trying to get something to work, but in the end it always works out.

Further on the ride it break-in; don't just go for a nice freeway ride. You want there to be lots of compression during break-in. You want to accelerate and decelerate (engine brake) hard. Break-in is fun, just be mindful of engine temps as the added friction is creating more heat than normal.

Yeah, I will usually cruise around city streets in 1st or 2nd (depending on speeds) and just run the rpms up, let off and coast down, and repeat several times. Go for a short steady drive, the repeat the first step and then a calm short drive home and change the oil.

Break it in like you drive it.

How does one be mindful of engine temps?

Actually according to the article on break in, it says to do several full throttle runs, with each followed by compression braking. This is to both provide the pressure to press the rings against the cylinder walls harder, and to then pull oil up into the cylinder to keep it lubed.

So it's not about taking the RPM's up high and then low, but rather bringing the combustion chamber pressures to their highest, as this is what actually seats the rings.

According to the article I linked, temp is only a concern if doing this process on a chassis dyno. If doing it on the road, you have air flow which will keep temps in the normal range anyways.

Well, you don't have to do this for miles. It's a full throttle run to close to redline I think 5 or 6 times and then your done. Basically if it's not sealed by then, it probably will never seal.

Have you ever watched what Honda does with EVERY new bike now? They do a chassis dyno full throttle run on every bike before it goes into the crate. I'm betting that's because that does most of the ring setting right there. The showed it on HD theater last year sometime.

Before the FD swap, I had to be careful of full throttle. In first gear that would almost always bring the front end up at least a little.

But that's what's needed for the break in process.

On that note, this is a moot point for Loho if the cylinder doesn't show any scaring when he pulls the head. The rings will stay seated if they were already seated and the jugs don't get pulled off.
