Randy, actually that was reading directly from the coil itself. the orange and gray wires complete the circuit and read 11.7 if I remember correctly. All I know is the coil "negative," opposite the positive line reads 1.7. I just thought that was strange.

Actually, you've got that a bit upside-down. The red/white is the positive lead to both coils. The gray and the orange are the negative that go to the TCI. The TCI grounds them intermittently to fire the coils.

How do you test ohms? I have a digital meter that does it all, but I can't get a reading on the four pronged thing at the tci box, but I have never done it before.

Do I groung it then stick it in the plug?

No, you test between the upper pair for one pickup, the lower pair for the other pickup. Value should be 720 Ohms +/- 20%


Somewhere between 600 - 860 is OK.

Oh, remove the plug from the TCI and test the plug, not the TCI

If you still have your old coils swap in the good one. That would tell you if the problem is directly related to the coil.

Enroute to XSEast my cylinders began dropping out after running through a cold fog but cleared as the weather did. Extra moisture facilitates shorting of coils.

btw: the recap is the starter turns it over but absolutely no ignition. I have spark but I guess not at the right time?

now remove the timing cover on the left side, put your probes back on one pair of the wires at the TCI plug and wiggle and gently pull the wires under the timing cover and see if your reading changes. If it does change you'll need to do the pickup wire fix. If not you've got the cover off so you might as well verify the timing.

Sorry if this has been covered before. If you changed the coils, or rewired the pickups or any of that, you might have the coils backwards. You can switch the connectors between the coils and see if that changes it.

Those pickup wires are as solid as a rock!

Dgsxer that occured to me as well as it happened when I first installed them

THis just in. THe red "thicker" wire next to the orange wire on the tci plug is not providing any voltage. Not sure if it is supposed to . All other colored ones around it read a steady 9.4 (my battery is only at 11.3 because of lots of cranking!)

Actually the rest read a 10.9...measured from the other side and got a better reading.

Is it red/white or red/yellow? Red/white should only be "hot" when your cranking.

PS get that battery charged up - i'll never start with a weak battery!

Hold the phone...

You say you had the trouble occur after switching to new coils? Are you 100 percent you didn't get the primary leads from the TCI swapped? Making the coils fire at the wrong time? Is your firing order right? Should be that one coil fires the middle cylinders and one fires the outter cylinders.

Sounds like it might be time to follow the mechanic's alphabet: ACBF (Always Check Basics First)

Hope it works out for you soon. These things can be such a pain.
