Ah, yet another year-to-year difference discovered. After looking at the parts fiche, what you have is a '80-81 standard master cylinder. The '78-79 have the brass inserts into the plastic for the cap and separate screws and a clamp to attach the reservoir to the body just like the rear one (in fact, the screws/clamp are the same). They don't show the reservoir, but the 80-81 screws are the same as the Specials.

Hey, Randy, do you remember that batch of replacement master cylinder reservoirs I took off of your hands a few years back? They fit onto standard M/Cs, but they had the brass inserts he is talking about. When I installed one onto one of my rides, I elected to drill through a couple of the inserts so two original screws would still go through to the body of the M/C. I just couldn't see myself relying on the friction fit of the square ring and gravity, to hold the replacment reservoir onto the body of the M/C. Perhaps natemoen has run into one of the reservoirs that you or I sold!

this is a pic of my stock m/c,
not sure if its the same as the midnites,
but if it is, it can run both calipers at the front.
