All my rubber bits seem to have shrunk! Only 4 out of 24 are big enough to stay in place. All the rest are too thin, regardless of which fin I try!
Has anyone tried making their own from a rubber pipe or similar??XS1100F 1980 European model. Standard. Dyna coils. Iridium plugs. XS750 final drive (sometimes). Micron fork brace. The rubber snubbers that hold the chains tight. They are a continuous rubber loop with crimped onto the loop hooks that are stretched to outer portion of chain and hooked in approx. 5-7 locations on outer chain.........if still confused....guess you could Google tire chains and their associated hardware.........anyway, thought using snipped off pieces of them would at least get the imagination going to resolve the rubber replacement issue.......BTW, anyone interested.....that DOES work........and they ARE still available from MotherYammy......come on a pull-off tab...........an doing this on a smart phone sucks!.........hope that was clear as mud James

Solution, I think
I reckon Viton cord, available on eBay, will do it. It's available in 10mm diameter, in black, and takes approx 200 degrees C. It's about $20 a metre though.
Nitrile cord is half the price but only takes up to 100 degrees C, apparently. Does the head temperature exceed that, does anyone know?XS1100F 1980 European model. Standard. Dyna coils. Riding in a parade, or in a traffic jam on a very hot day (95-100*F), those cylinder head temps could likely see close to 400*F (just over 204*C).
Granted, that's an extreme scenario, but here in Phoenix we have those kinds of temps, and even well beyond (115-120*F)!!
But under normal conditions, I would think the cylinder head temps would be in the 200-250*F (roughly 93-121*C) range ...
And the inner two cylinders would most likely be running slightly hotter than the outer two cylinders.Last edited by Prisoner6; 08-27-2014, 06:19 AM.Marco

It looks like it will have to be the Viton, I reckon. I wonder what the OEM ones are made of? Genuine rubber?XS1100F 1980 European model. Standard. Dyna coils. Iridium plugs. Blimey, that's hot! We don't get that sort of heat here, of course, but I get the point. There are no rubber dampers on the inner two cylinders..they go just on the head fins at 1 and 4.

Not sure exactly what kind of rubber/material Yamaha used for the OEM dampeners, but ...
Something else you could try is this: If you have some old spark plug wire in decent shape (black, of course) lying around, it could possibly be used as an alternative.
I would think the spark plug wire would be more solid than, say, a heavy-walled/thick-walled fuel line, and would probably withstand the heat better ... JATMarco

You can swell some rubber like parts with fuel or acetone, once swelled would they stay that way ? Does the heat of the engine keep them from shrinking, would it keep the ones that were swelled with acetone from shrinking back ?76 XS650 C ROADSTER
