Hey, I know this is a dumb-a$# question but I gotta ask it cause I can't get anything else done to the bike til I do...how the heck do you get the freakin seat off???????? When I use the key to unlock the sucker, it does, but then I can't get the thing to come off. Yep, I'm a newbie so pretty dumb and inexperienced but is there a trick from that point to get it off? Blast away you guys with all the smart remarks but someone seriously tell me my answer please!!! Thanks!

Hello,
Mine has nuts on either underside of seat that have to just be loosened and then slid forward or is it back. Then you lift up slightly and slide back from under the tank.
Hope this is your answer...Kurt

seat removed
Not to go against everyone but my seat lock has a latch/lever that I have to push down on both sides. On the lock side the lock turns one way to release the helmet latch and the other releases the seat but I still have to push down on the lever.Last edited by Bigge_al; 02-12-2010, 12:37 PM.Eric (South of Greensboro, NC)

It looks like you are asking about an XJ, not an XS. The key lock only releases the one side. These is a little lever on each side of the seat lock mechanism that you flip. Then lift the back of the seat and slide it back toward the rear of the bike. At this point it should just lift right off.

As suggested, you should get a manual. You can download one for free from the link in my signature. You'll find there are a few things (like this one) that are unique about the XJ when comared to the XS's.
You should also put your model in your signature so we know what bike you're asking about.1980 XS850SG - Sold

Fully Vetterized and Dynojet Kit added, Heated Grips, Truck-Lite LED headlight, Accel Coils, Irridium plugs, TKAT Fork Brace, XS850LH Final Drive & Black SS Brake lines from Chacal.
Here's my web page devoted to my bike! XS/XJ User's Manuals there, and the XJ1100 Service Manual and both XS1100 Service manuals (free download!).

1sttimeXSowner,
You might also update your signature, and put the bike type, year, all that good stuff there, that way we can tell what ya got and help ya better.
Case in point: XS seats bolt down... XJ's have 2 levers on each side...
If they give ya too hard of a time around here... you can always PM me... I've got one too.
Randy: Don't be cussin the XJ's... just cause Yamaha finally got smart & fixed a bunch of the XS's shortcommings in '82! LOL'82 XJ1100J Maxim (has been sold.)

Dude...
Update the signature and location....
For at least 75% of us out there, there is someone close by also!!! Cold starting....
welllllll you could always shoot some dragon juice (starting fluid) in the air filters...not the best way, but it does work...also shoot some down the cylinder if your having trouble, but best bet is to figure out WHY its starting hard cold!!!! weak spark, bad fuel. bike engines are the same as the rest. Suck, squeeze, bang, blow. any one of them can make the bike run bad.....'81H (my first XS ) "Grey Ghost"
