You people that can make gas tanks are amazing and your project is looking really good since you started it with just the engine, forks, wheels and a couple of stands!

Fantastic progress! Keep inspiring us mere mortals!
Thanks for the kind replies!
There is more ..
A vertical plate has been welded in the lower tank to make it a bit sturdier to hold my weight ...
Bike is a bit high on the end as it has a stand under it because of a flat rear tire..
Another insert at the back for lifting it of the bike has been added..
And finished the inside. The larger opening is for placing the electrics, the smaller one for the throttle cable and camchain tunnel...
And the outside welds finished ..
Finally, the plate with the fuel filler openings is added ...

"What they do have is an implacable, unrelenting presence and movement that bespeaks massive power lurking behind paint and chrome. They don't wail like a screeching ninja, the don't rumble like a harley. They just growl like a spactic, stressed out badger waiting to rip your face off and eat your soul." Trainzz~RIP~
Would u mind posting your source for the fuel cap and filler? Just curious what else they make and if its available stateside...
hi Daveyg, I forgot where it came from but you can get it from several cnc suppliers.
At the moment I am still busy rebuilding the engine from a Moto Martin framed Cbx1000 for a client but it's nearing completion, so with any luck I can start again soon with my racer... still standing there.
This week I picked up a complete xs and several boxes full of parts, I all got for free. It even contains a NOS 2H9 wiring harness and black box.... The bike had been standing for 20+ years and belongs to a friend of mine I hadn't seen for that same amount of time. We did a lot of riding together then. He now has a midlifecrisis and bought himself a HARLEY ....... so decided to get rid of the XS because of storing issues ..
The engine has been massaged in the 80's by JSPP in Holland. It has Crane cams, 1mm bigger inlet valves, head saw some flowing work, and it has a big bore kit (don't know how big ...) so it could be a great engine for the racer but it looks a bit tired and I have no clue if the engine turns ( anyway tires were flat, that's for sure...). But who cares
Here are some pics of my new treasures...:
the bike: 80's styling ... early brembo's ... dyna ... 18"pvm .. big oilcooler ..

Everything looks ok although it needs lots of work ...
took the covers, tank and seat off, checked if the pickup plate moved freely
Pulled out the plugs, no rust on the cylinder walls ... squirted some oil on the pistons, turned the crank by hand... turns extremely easy, almost no sound. Used a starter aid... turns like a new one .. starts to look really good now. Maybe there's some life left in the electrics, now I know why there was that NOS wiring harness
even the fuel tank is still full

guess he figured giving it to you, it wouldn't end up wasted and might get used by someone who gives a rip about these bikes. Must've been his way of trying to make amends for buying a north american paint shaker to replace his nads. So sad to see people think that a harley answers all life's problems.
Even a blind monkey gets the odd banana.
1979 XS 1100 special (been down the PO trail and it was messy)
Well, it took a while but this one is back on a work bench ... I know I will at least make one person happy on this forum
It is a shame most of the pictures in this thread have disappeared but at least I still have lots of them on my laptop computer..
That you have Mathh! Definitely some nice work done there! Appreciate the update and picture! Builds done like you do them show some amazing skills!
