  • Tires !!!!!!

So when I did my restore I bought a new set of tires. Dunlop D404. They are almost bald! They dont even have 3000 miles on them and I do not do burnouts. Any suggestions on a tire that will last longer and not cut a hole in my pocket???

Ding, you got the losing tire. I think it's the one thing all of us agree on here, that the D404's are junk. I'm in the process of trying out some Kenda 630's (I think that's the model number) but not I've gotta wait till I get my paycheck to get them.

But this is not fair, I wanted to be the last one to start a dreaded tire thread.

A motorcycle is a lot like a boat. A hole you throw money into.

Dunlops are good grippy tires, that means they have a soft "gripping" compound.

Great to keep you out of trouble, but like Goodrich TA's on a car they don't last as long as a standard compound.

There are a lot of cheaper, harder compound tires out there. But, be careful! Especially if you ride aggressivly. They don't hold the road as well.

I'm sure Russ will chime in on this thread, he loves tire threads! The Dunlop Elite III have been a long lasting, corner gripping and great in the rain tire that a lot of people on here will agree on.

The 404's are alright. They work fine on bikes that don't weigh 600lbs. That's the problem. They have held up fine on the 650s but I've heard lots of guys say they didn't get the mileage they expected when they had them on the 1100. You want mileage and a good grip? Bite the bullet and buy a set of E3s

            Austin,

I've got over 6000 miles now on my E3's... still look great.

Tod's ran 'em a lot longer... had good luck.

I'm stickin' w/ em. I've heard a few complain about the way they shed water... but I have no complaints. Great all-around tire, good handler.

Barring a road hazard... I should get 12 - 15,000 out of 'em.
They may cost more to buy new, but multiply what you spent on the 404's X 5 = 1 set of E3's. Which is the better deal?

(Crap, I just contributed to another tire thread... Geesh... sorry guys. )

I'm likin' the Bridgestone S-11's that Betsy's wearing. They stick to the road good, and I got the set from Motorcycle Superstore for $135 with free shipping. Not sure on the mileage yet, but so far they seem to be holding up pretty well. Most of the reviews I've read say to expect 7-10K from the rear - more on the front.
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

That's really weird about the D404's. I put a set on this past spring that I've racked up over 3k on and they are hardly worn and I'm a pretty aggressive rider.

The Elites and other models have gotten good reviews by those that use them. The 404's have been consistently bad for almost everyone. Someone said that they stick to the road good, but I have seen many cases where they didn't compared to any other brand. Every once in awhile someone reports good results with them. To me, that says that there is a major quality control problem with them. Personally, I would avoid the 404's like the plague.

And thank you for another tire thread Austin.

I tried to go w/ E3 but couldn't find one for my 17". So I put Bridgestone S-11's on. 3K and still look new, F&R. Of course I don't drive like Tod.

D404. The new four letter word. I think Dunlop is in line for some seroius liability issues if they don't discontinue those things. They aren't even that inexpensive. For about the same price you can get a nice Shinko that will out last it hands down. Or for a little more there are a plethora of other tires that will work much better.

I really hate messing with tires! In my opinion, paying a little more and getting more mileage is saving money. Last year I ran Conti-Tours. They are made for heavy touring bikes. I got well over 20,000 miles on that set. I had a blow-out with one this year, but I doubt it was the fault of the tire but who knows. I will be replacing the Maxis tire the Harley dealer put on with another Conti when it wears down a little more and that won't be a lot more miles.
