Okay... What sort of switch is it? Has anyone opened it up. Looking at the wiring diagram I can see it's a NO switch that simply shorts the ignition module to earth, hence the reason the bike will run without it, but what does it consist of? Is it a mercury type device, or a simple rolling brass ball? or some other type of gravity switch? Mercury switches, unless broken are virtually bullet proof and most other gravity switches are fairly simple devices that should easily be fixed if not working.

60 Degrees of Separation
Brian, inside the tipover switch is a U-shaped, non-conducting bolt with a heavy metal ring over it.
When the bike is upright the metal ring rests at the bottom of the "U" and doesn't touch any contacts.
When the bike tips over or leans more than 60 degrees the metal ring slides along one leg of the "U" and grounds the ignition circuit, killing the engine.

Okay, thanks Scott, it's sound like a variation on a simple rolling ball gravity switch and should be simple to fix. Most problems with this type are corroded contacts or stuck "balls". It's probably easier to disconnect than fix but if the safety angle is important then fixing it should'nt present any problems.1980 SG. (Sold - waiting on replacement)

I think it is a good feature. If it is missing on your bike or not functioning, please find a replacement. I dumpt my bike with the wife on board last year. My bike killed as designed. Could have been a problem had it not! I like this feature and it doesn't deminish man-hair to say so!

Wish i had one on my 77 RM250 years ago.
Ok, had no kill switch either. Had to stall the bike to shut it off.
I was riding in the coulee's here and my throttle cable broke and jammed my carb wide open in third gear.
No way to shut it off, rear brake was non existent.
I rode it into the ground, literally.
Bike took off, i grabbed a handfull of front brake, went about 200ft before jumping onto a gravel road.
Once my front wheel got airborne the brake locked it up, once it touched ground, so did i with the bike on top of me trying to do Mach 2.
A friend saw what happened and came to my rescue. Rear wheel spinning wildly above my thigh. He pulled the plug wire off to kill it.
Thank gawd.
Towed me and my bike home with a peice of barbed wire tied to the back of his Husquavarna and to the handle bar of my RM.

I know mine works fine. I tested it when I dropped it in the parking lot. Engine went right off. Kind of an embarrassing way to test it, but certainly affective (also affective at demonstrating the non-gas resistance of fresh paint )Cy
