Emergency shut-off
By passing the shut-off may work..however I don't recommend it unless you are absolutely "stuck" somewherre. On my XS1100 "F" standard I bypassed the lighting reserve unit. So far I have had no problems with my electrical system by doing this. The shut-off feature is much more important. I was recently hit on the freeway and the bike went down on me. As designed...the engine quit and frankly I was glad it did. My leg was caught under the rear wheel. Try to find the original unit or replace it as soon as you possibly can. Ride safe!

The main reason for the automatic emergency cutoff switch is to kill the engine if you break or grind a hole an engine case in an accident, it won't keep running and pump all the oil out of the engine, before you can hit the kill switch.Fastmover

I know there are many people who have simply unplugged the tipover switch and left it off with no ill effects. Of course it means that the engine will not be automatically turned off in the event of a tipover. It will, however, run as usual with no other side effects.1980 XS850SG - Sold

Bug's got it.
I agree with bug. Mine decided to shut my bike down at really inconvienint times during hard cornering almost crashing me. Rather than replace it I just removed it, no jumpers required. If I crash, It won't be because of a tip over switch. I'll just have to shut it down myself. If I can't get up I doubt I'd be worrying about it anyway. RickI May Be Crazy, But I Have A Good Time.

I know its a safety feature I just couldn't find mine. To me it doe seem kinda like a catch 22 kinda like seat belts I have cut dead people out of cars that were killed by them that would not have been if they didn't wear them and I've seen people ejected that should have wore their seatbelt likewise the safety switch is great but what if somehow it failed? I will try to find one or get one from andreashweis.79 XS 1100 Special

Do you mean the eswitch on the right handle bar? or the "tip over" switch? Honestly, I have yet to find that tip over switch on a wiring diagram and have no idea where it is on my bike. There are alot fo bikes out there without one, and I would not lose alot of sleep about running wihtout it. If you get that far over, chances are you will do something to the bike that will kill it anyway, like short out the main fuse, or hit the handlebar e-switch, or slam a footpeg through an engine pan and drain out the oil. Not to mention the float bowls and jets get fairly confused on their sides for the fuel air ratio.
I would not however feel very comfortable running without the one on the right handlebar. That to me is VERY handy to shut it off for safety situations.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

The switch is under the gas tank, between the regulator and the coils. It's the one with an arrow and 'up' on it.
I don't believe it's possible to lean these things far enough over to trip that switch, well not while moving...
I also believe it's to protect the rider from being chewed apart by the rear wheel in an accident. These things had enough power to do serious damage.
Yamaha couldn't care less if you tore a hole in the crankcase and wrecked the motor, they have plenty more to sell.Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

Didnt know I had one on my special but if I have it doesnt work. I had to hit the kill switch while under the bike a couple of months back, or my broken leg would've been a minced leg. If my foot had been standing up straight instead of lying on the road 90 degrees to my knee it would've been in the spokes and they were still turnin in third gear1980 SG. If the bike doesnt need it to run, other than an actual tip over, how do we know if they're working??1980 SG. (Sold - waiting on replacement)
