I never know if i will take the bike or Jeep to work, therefore the bike always has gas in it.The stations around me are usually closed by the time i go to work and the ones that are opened all night are not on my way to work.

I have always filled up long before I get the low fuel warning light. Awhile a go I had run out of fuel on a friends bike cause his light was broken. Luckly it died 1/4 mile from the gas station. So out of habbit I fill up when ever I take the bike out.Four wheels move your body, two wheels move your soul.

Kinky
I use a couple of compression springs over my lines to keep them from kinking. The local hardware store has lots, I got ones about 1 1/2" long with the id just bigger then the lines.Ernie

Maybe a stupid question
Do 80 carbs have individual connectors? The reason I ask is you said you have 4 fuel lines. My 79sf only has 2. Am I missing something?1979XS1100SF

The reason for four fuel lines is the front tap on the petcock was designed to provide a prime circuit that supplied the carbs uninterupted fuel whereas the rear tap fed a vacuum shutoff (octopus). Many owners have removed the octopus and then capped the prime tap leaving only two fuel lines.
Tim, check your tank, you will probably find the front taps on your petcocks are capped.Ernie

Is it better to get rid of the octopus? What are are advatage/disadvantage of doing so?
Thanks,

Its a matter of preference.
Some get rid of it when it starts leaking, rather then rebuilding it. Myself I did away with it to make the plumbing cleaner and add in line filters. Once you do get rid of it, you should remember to turn your petcocks off, just in case a float sticks or a float valve/ oring leaks.
Some like to keep the bike stock so they leave it on..."if it ain't broke don't fix it"Ernie

Thanks,

Disadvantages: Leaks(possible fire), fuel starvation, makes the carbs just a plain B!tch to work on, parts to rebuild are either unobtainable or don't fit correctly, POS, etc.

In the petcock rebuild came the rebuild for the octy. I like it personally, my last bike was fuel injected so trying to remember to turn off the fuel is hit and miss with my memory! I say rebuild it and keep it, makes life easier.http://www.myspace.com/i_give_you_power

Prime outlet
Ernie, Yes my prime outlets are plugged ,because I simplified the hose routing. Previously I had the 2 outlets tee'd together then run to the carbs. It was a PIA so I plugged the prime line. I didn't know MrOzz a octy, hence the question about the 4 fuel lines. I was concerned, like Dick, that the vent lines were hooked to fuel lines. That was worriesome.
