  • Fuel Line Length

Ok another dumb question by me, haha.

The PO replaced the fuel lines comming from the petcoks. They are about 6" to 1'. Do the have to be that long or can I shorten them? When I reinstalled my tank after doing my 1st carb sync they are kind of getting pinched. So any info would be helpful.

    TIA

    fuel lines

Go ahead and shorten them up if they are pinched. Some people like them longer so they can pull the tank back, spin it around and set it where the seat goes to do their carb sync.

You might be better served rerouting them.Right petcock to left 2 carbs and vise versa. That wa you dont have to cut them and you xtra if you need it later. And you can pick up tank at back to sync.

I like them a little longer because i put some big fuel filters in between and didn't want the lines to kink.I also put the lines from the right side to the left carbs and vice versa. Also some fuel lines kink easier than others.

I redid mine longer to keep them from kinking. I just kind of looped them around. Better to have more, then if you get a leak at a fitting you have enough to cut it and keep going.

They are to long and pinching. Looks like I am going to have to get some better fuel line than the PO put on.

Have any of you found some decent fuel line to use?

              Thanks for all the info.

I like the Pingel fuel line as it is very easy to work with and doesn't kink easily.

Would anyone have a pic on how they routed their fuel lines? No matter what I try they kink. So I shorttened them to stop the kinking. ( I see the advantages of keeping them longer).
Also do all 4 need to be the same length so the fuel delivery is the same to all carbs?

I have cleaned my carbs, set the float bowls to spec and syncronized my carbs but I still am getting some hesitation when I hit the throttle.

                    Thanks again all.

Try turning your idle mixture screws out 1/4 turn. Hesitation from launch is usually due to a lean idle mixture. Route the left petcock line over and down between carbs 3+4 to inlet. Right one over and down between carbs 1+2 to inlet. Try to have both lines the same legnth but it isn't that critical.

                        New Lines

My lines were pinched too, I bought new clear lines from the local motorcycle shop and re-routed them similar to bikerphil (I did an extra loop because I added some inline shutoff valves as a quick fix for leaky petcocks). That stoped all the pinching. If you would still like a picture PM me your email address.
I also remember seeing a diagram on this site drawn out by someone for fuel line routing with inline filters if you can find it.

Unlike what it said in the diagram,i mounted my filters on their sides as i don't let the tank run until nearly empty. When it gets to the point of switching to reserve,i fill it up.With the price of gas today, it seems better to fill up the tank halfway instead of letting it run dry and paying more.I usually set my odometer so i know how much fuel i use.

                              I remember

When I lived in cold climes it was necessary to keep the tank full, otherwise moisture would form in the tank and run to the bottom where it would freeze and the vehicle wouldn't start or run. A friend mentioned that it costs no more to keep it full than empty. If you think about it you will see that it's true. I got in the habit of filling up just before I got home.
