I get 30 mpg and I have a 4 to 1 exhaust with a muffler that is completely gutted. It wasn't on purpose but it backfired so had one time it blew the insides out. I think I get only 30 mpg because my #3 cylinder, and possibly other ones, misfire.

35 MPG is about right when I take a good average. I think the bike runs great, although because it's not a high revver I would think it could muster up at least 40. Of course it is pretty heavy by modern comparisons. My FZ1 gets better mileage (about 39) but then its a fuel injected lightweight too. Can't beat the smell of gas & oil

Got my first reading on "picky" today. She got 35.8 with running anywhere from 70-100 and around town stop and go. Stock with harley mufflers, i thought that was pretty good.Jeff

Mpg
Checked my 79SF on a combination of twisties and some highway riding. It got 47 MPG with stock everything. Afterwards I changed pilot jets from 42.5 to 45 and pilot air jets from 180 to 205 to see the difference in driveability/performance. I believe the latter jets are what came in the 1978 XS1100. Am currently checking the difference in mileage (if any). The bike liked the jet change. The performance is much better, especially low end. Plugs burn a browinish color. Will post MPG when available.
My 1981H (Venturer) on the fall ride in September (Ironhorse) got 39 MPG. In the same area with similar riding 2 weeks prior it got 42 MPG. It is stock everything also.

Mileage
Howdy ho, got my 78 up and running in July and have put on 3000 miles plus so far and 39-41 has been constant. I'm afraid to put the airbox on for fear of messing up the carbs after removal and reinsertion as it's running very well. I wonder if my mileage might increase with the airbox back on...

from the above I calculate that your bike has a 4 oz. fuel tank and I reckon you are telling lies about it's gas consumption.

The folks who do crossword puzzles tout the benefits of exercising the mind to ward off the onset of old timers disease. Memory exercise or something of that nature.
Look on the pop-up-ance of these polls as a way to get some mind exercise that is missing in the humdrum day to day "I've got a miss in my muffler bearing", or "the color scheme of the side marker is wrong for my concept, so what can I do?" messages that seem to be the norm.
All you have to do is go back through the archives, and memorize the titles of all the old polls, and when one pops up , you can just scroll on past it and,
---------- NOT READ it!
What a concept!
And if you are not suffering the onset of OT disease, pretty soon you don't have to ever again read anything that has crossed your eyes before.
Live long and prosper.

I always think someone has replied who may have better or worse mileage. I try to read each thread posted every day. If something new pops up, well enquiring minds wish to know. It just bugs me when an old poll keeps on returning, but it is just like an accident...you have to look when you go past.2-79 XS1100 SF
