  • Mountain run

I don't feel to bad about my mileage after reading through the posts here. I made a 127 mile run this last weekend up to the Mt St Helens viewpoint. A lot of minor uphill running, and corners. Slow running at about 50 MPH and down. I got home, and filled her up with 3.1 gal.41 MPG. Completely stock bike with no load except my fat _ss at 240 lgs. It was a warm day at about 80 in the mountains.

    • I get 30 to 35 mpg, mostly short rides, errands, stop and go traffic, some freeway. Stock except for Mac 4-2 exhaust. Probably needs a carb sync, had the bike 18 years, have yet to sync the carbs. Smells a bit rich too.

        • Went on a cruise up to Maligne Lake, Saturday, with a couple firends. Wasn't doing a fuel mileage run, or anything but got 50.45(imp) or 42mpg(US).

Haven't done any tuning since the top end rebuild, in May, but each run out the milage improves, and oil consumption is down.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

          • Tuning the FI makes it very difficult to get decent mileage. However, even being on the throttle hard and often and never cruising less than 75 I noted the best mileage the bike has ever gotten the other day; 38mpg. I am very confident that if I could stay out of the throttle, I would be getting mid 40's.

            • My XS11SG is stock except for UNIpods replacing the airbox and re-jetting to 120s. Plus the bike is hauling a sidecar and the average sidecar rig has worse aerodynamics than a housebrick. 27mpg highway, same as my 3.8 litre Buick.
Mind you, around town the rig still gets 27mpg while the Buick is down to 20.

              • Modification that dropped the mpg's is the FD. The jetting is different to compensate for the cones (pods), and the exhaust is a Cowley 4-1.

I am still thinking my carbs are out of sync, but that is left for another threat.

                • I got a new bottom airbox (Stock) and drilled 2 - 1" holes on corners (outside of the filter to help it breath better, since I put a K&N in. Best previous was 32.5MPG, last 2 tanks were 33.5mpg. That is with 140 mains (mine is a 1978).
It seems to work for me. WHen I bought the bike, it only got like 25mpg, before I rebuilt the carbs. I think I need to adjust the valves, it seems to rattle quite a bit.

If you perforated the box outside of the filter element, you are allowing unfiltered air into the engine. The area inside the filter element is the dirty air, and this is the place additional holes are added.

Forgot to say, I am getting 18 km per liter. Someone on another thread worked it out to be 43mpg, and says it is good mileage over there. Over here it is also good mileage.

                          • Really odd

Just checked and I barely put 1.85 gallons in at 79 miles. That figures at more than 42 MPG in the DFW quagmire. Someone is doing something wrong or I have it running right. What is so odd is that I haven't tried to tweek it yet. I have a hiccup (or burp) from my 4th cylinder at mostly under 2000 RPM. Never had a colortune or anything more than a homemade Sync tool on it. My idle is at 800 (don't like it there). Have not done the 750 mod yet (I have an idea on that one in new thread). Still running the original coils and plug wires. I drive like I'm burning money. So how am I getting between 42/45 MPG? Just curious.

Maybe I should have done the 750 mod then I would have seen real MPG!

                            • Mine gets around 42 on the highway. Zipping from stop light to stop light it drops to around 30. Driving style has a huge impact when it comes to mpg's. Were you spending a lot of time on the big roads?
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

65 to 95 on the freeways but quite a bit of traffic light stuff too. Maybe 60/40 counting in a couple of double downshift (to triple digit) rip and roars. Oh, yeah and one brief shower.
