  • I am getting in the mid 40s to low 50's mpg (Imp) now with the 80SG.

Derwat runs 2-3mpg more than I get, when we go on trips together.

    He has the 750FD, I don't.

I have modified my carbs from stock up from 110 to 120mains, down from 45 to 42 pilots, Mike'sXS needles/tubes, floats down 2mm).

The only thing he did was drop his needles one notch (79SF).
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

    • Acetone

This is all you need.... 1.5Oz./5 gal.
A 50ml polypropylene/ethylene container (BD or Corning are common brands) to a fresh Full Tank of gas. I use a 50ml centrifuge tube from work because it has a conical end that slips in the jeans pocket so easy. I have actually spilled it on the paint a few times and it is so volatile that it evaporates immediately without attacking the paint.

      • I've tried acetone, in the car, and it made no noticeable difference.

I will have to try it in the bike again.

        • It is hard to notice on fuel injected vehicles that atomize the hydrocarbons well, but Carbeurated engines, you notice right off the bat and in the pants....

            • Hello!

Thought I'd chime in on the acetone... I recently rebuild a 24' Cabin Cruiser Boat from stringers to VBirth to Transom and used gallons upon gallons of acetone.

Acetone has a low molecular weight and will seep into rubber seals causing them to swell. Running this stuff through gas lines constantly would not seem wise in my humble opinion. It DOES NOT work with PVC or ABS. So watch any polymer rings, lines or washers that may exist anywhere near the fuel system that may contain these polymers.

Any chemical added to a circuit may come into contact with many different substances. Each substance along the system would need to be tested.

I would use a small amount of pure acetone with gas - maybe once a year with only 1/2 gallon of gasoline. Someone would need to prove to me it did not break down any of the hydrocarbon chains in the petrol. If it could break down the chains - It could leave wax behind - The very thing we are trying to clean.

              IMHO

              • CONCENTRATIONS where it's at

                What Conc. did you run?
Acetone will eat anything almost at high conc.
we're talking 1/600 mix to do it's job of complete combustion.
What's funny is Ethanol by itself is not harmful to The NEWER synthetics in NEWER fuel systems, however what Big Govie fails to mention that when mixed with Hydrocarbons, INSTANTLY organic acids are formed that start their diet on even the best Synthetics......

                • Knowing nothing about chemicals (or much else for that matter) is the effect of acetone not just to raise the octane?

                  • No, raising octane does nothing for us.

Acetone makes the gasoline 'wetter' so to speak, so that it atomizes quicker.

It makes the engine better able to run on less fuel.

So does it need rejetting or you just need less throttle for the same speed?

                      • Less throttle. Some people say they had to readjust the idle.

We're talking a couple mpg, not huge jumps.

We just got back on Sunday from a 128 mile trip, mostly back roads, not a lot of stopping/starting averaged about 55-65mph.

After getting back, I Filled up with 3.6 gallons, that was about 35.5MPG!!

Previous best was 31 mpg. Getting better!

I am sure the Vetter Quicksilver Fairing helped, it did cut the air drag down a lot on my chest and arms. (I only had a small windshield previously).

                              • 49 mpg

                                Just completed an 850FD swap.
                                Makes the bike Smoooove.

Ran off 135 miles on 2.75 gal of Shell midgrade just buzzing around on county roads.
In/out of town, mostly 50-60-70 with some short 80mph stretches. Not a lot of redline, but I did air it out a few times.

Stock except for Jardine 4 into 2 and a Vetter.
Before I was pulling 40 MPG, but that was with a lot of freeway@ 75-80.
