'78 "E" Stock Jets, air filter, aftermarket mufflers XS750 mod. Vetter fairing and leather saddlebags. I average 42 -44 MPG
and I am happy!

Riding style definitely makes the difference. I gassed up yesterday after flogging the old girl as usual (it's not abuse if she likes it ), and mileage was a shade over 30. Went for a long relaxed cruise in the country today with the SWOXS crew, and at our midway gas stop I checked it again - over 40 mpg!!! I've been grinnin' ever since.

Just saw this :-) You were drafting me weren't ya Nice smooth throttle action with easy and steady speeds helps.I wonder if a full fairing helps mpg vs a body cutting the wind.I am usually in the 39-40mpg

I was drafting you 'till you started hammerin' it in the twisties . Course now that I know it will get over 40 mpg I'm not as worried about it. I kept wondering why my mileage was always around 32. Should have known it's all in the wrist .

Didn't hammer THAT much,fairing and saddle bags were pretty full with train stuff:-)that takes a bit of the handeling away plus buckhorn bars and a card carrying member of the AARP....felt like I was riding a Buick.But good easy wrist action,I never went above 4500 rpm and easy on the rpm's will get that mpg up.

I just installed the 750 fd on my bike and I also have 85 fj1100 carbs w/ 120m and42.5pilots I need to figure out max range in normal conditions , I guess ill fill her up and a gas can and see how far I get (gauge not workin)

With my style of riding I wouldn't mind having the taller gearing,the engine has plenty of torque and I don't care if a 650 can beat me a 1/4 mile..lets us know how you like the 750 rear end.

HI guys Could we get some riding speeds to go along with the mpg? I am really curious as to what everyone else is getting. I get about 30-35mpg and i go about 70-75. Thanks

On the superslabs I average 70. That seems to be the bikes sweet spot. In town, it is what it is. Since the 750 final drive swap I average 40-45 mpg with a good mix of both driving styles.

In a group ride with hills and twisties where we would average 40-50 mph, if I avoid using 5th gear I get better mileage. The engine seems to like to be run somewhere between 4500-5000 RPM.

The 750 mod is great it changes the bikes attitude from a roaring lion into a smooth purring cat , you feel you can ride all day at 70-80 mph I still don't really know how the mileage is but I got about 38 under street and heavy throttle

Crappy mileage and black plugs

So I got my dad's 79' 1100 XS with 8500 miles. He has had it for 29 of those 30 years and hardly rode it. I had it worked-over last summer and it cost me $1400 to tune the thing up and replace the pickup coil with a used one. It runs and it throttles awesome while under no load , but as soon as I get it in gear and try to get going, it feels like it is struggling and jerking, but once I'm rolling it's fine. Then 4000RMPs happen and it starts jerking again and I can't get the motor any faster. When I shift up, it moves me along fine, under 4000RPM's but I can't seem to get it above that. I also only get between 55-89 miles out of a tank of Chevron Super. The exhaust pops like a popcorn popper when I down-shift and the plugs are black and sooty, especially the far left one. I am not a mechanic and feel like my "Yamaha recommended" mechanic didn't do anything to improve the bike. It's gorgeous and in fantastic cosmetic condition. I remember riding on it 25 years ago on cmapong trips with dad. I just want it to work to its popential. HELP! What does it sound like the problem is? Anyone?

Switch over to the lowest grade gas they have at chevron. Our bikes were not meant for the super stuff(harder to burn). Run half a can of seafoam into a full tank and ride out that tank. That will help clean out some gunk. You might have to rejet your carbs, maybe too rich? The spark plugs are not burning cleanly from the use of higher octane gas?That's all i can think off atm. hope it helps.

Carbs are not cleaned out. Follow the directions on here and do it yourself if you want it done right.

Right in the middle...

Stock '82 XJ1100, runs great... Full vetter, hardbags, and trunk. Regardless of riding style, gets 30mpg. Getting ready to take her on a long trip from OK to Colorado next week... we'll see. I'd love to improve from 30, but not complaining.

80 SG, full dresser. Riding hard in the Coast Range, forest roads, river roads, etc., sea level to 3000 ft. Lots of 2nd & 3rd gear time, 4-5K rpm, today. Stock XJ carbs on it, not in the best of shape, 850 FD swap. Got 40.1 mpg on 3 fillups. Not much wind. Pretty happy with 40. Stock FD would maybe get 36 or 7 if I took it real easy. I use Sea Foam every fill, but I'm going to try some gasetone and see what happens.

I'm glad to see most people are getting better MPG's with the 750 FD Mod. I wish I had started the acetone treatment before I swapped over to chaindrive from the 750 FD mod to see the difference. As of now, if I just use 87 octane (100% Petrol), my bike runs fine and the plugs are black when I pull them. However, If I run 50ml acetone/full tank, I get better MPG's and I pull the plugs and they are more Tan. My final drive ratio is close to stock and I get 36 MPG's. I am hoping to improve to 40 when I install the 14 tooth back on next week. As of now, I can be cruising along a side street at 4K in 2nd gear, gun it and spin the rear tire. I've tried it when using just straight Petrol and can't do it to the 200 rear tire. Happy XSiveness.....
