  • Beautiful bike. Sleek and no nonsense, I love it! Glad to hear it'll be rumbling away for you soon.
    Looking for an XS

    79 XS1100SF (RIP)
    - stock standard headers(stupid PO), slip-on after-market mufflers.
    - after-market rear shocks (PO installed)
    - no airbox, POD filters

    Misery remembered is ADVENTURE!

    • Another Set Back!!!

Well tonight I tried to bleed the brakes and the front right caliper leaked. It started coming out around the piston. I put new seals inside the calipers but after taking the right one back off I saw where the new seal tore up as I was putting it back together. Luckily my old ones are in decent shape. I have the old seals soaking in brake fluid. I have the piston in the freezer and I'm gonna heat the caliper before I try putting this one back together.

Is there a trick to putting these back together that I should know?

Yup, very small amount of Silicon grease on the seals, helps everything slide together and is good for the seals.

Bikes looking beautiful, as we said earlier, you've ended up with a much cooler bike than a Yamaha Roadstar Warrior Midnight that you lusted after

                      • Hehe thanks! Yeah I've thought about doing another one in Silver with the same wheels. I liked the way it looked with the tank bare metal so I think a nice pearl silver would look cool. I could build a second one in a fraction of the time!!!

Well they say you learn something new everyday. Today I learned that if you leave 30 year old caliper piston seals in a little glass with brake fluid in it, they will swell up to about 1/4" beyond their normal diameter! I didn't know brake fluid made things grow?! I'm thinking of soaking my......nevermind.

So tonight I was looking forward to re-using my old seals and putting the front brakes back together but now I'm screwed. I'm gonna see if Ace has anything similar but I fear I might be ordering some new ones. I'm such a retard! If I'd have left them sitting on the work bench I might be riding to work tomorrow. But instead I thought it would do them some good to soak....kinda loosen them up. Well, they loosened up! The worst part is it's supposed to be 62 degrees tomorrow and 65 Sunday!

                        • If you wipe the seals off and leave them in a warm place the solvent part of the fluid the seals have absorbed will evaporate off and they will shrink back to their normal size.

Down side is it takes that long you'd be quicker buying some new ones

                            • Very nice work, Da. Especially if this is your first bike project. I think it's most impressive that your doing the paint work yourself.
I'd like to see you stick with the Kerker system as it's the best sounding, and probably the most sought after 4-1 system. All the 4-2's I've heard make the bike sound like a subaru. However, if you must get rid of it.. I got dibs
