looks amazing. If you have fuel in your airbox then some how that had to get past your needle and seat. Once my carbs get all gunked up from my messy tank they leak also. But once I clean them this is not as issue. Even with leaky petcocks there are no leaks. And with inline filters I'm not having the gunking up issues anymore.
My PO rebuilt the petcocks a couple of times trying to fix the leaky gas issue. It seams it's hard to make them stop leaking. But once I started cleaning the carbs to resolve the issue I removed the octy and always leave the petcock on prime and have no leaks. My long overdue point is your immediate issue would seam to be more along the lines of gas getting past your needle that should be seated. It probably resolved itself before just from being run enough to clear any obstructions. If you don't feel like disasembling the cabs you could just try some of the miracle fuel cleaners. Or go ahead and replace the needle and seats to be sure. I think some times the hole in the seat can get oblong.
I too have inline filters and no octy. The thing is I already rebuilt the carbs last spring. They have all new needle valves and seats (and everything else that comes with the PNM kits). I only ran the bike about a month last summer before I took it apart and had no fuel problems. I'm hoping it's the vent lines that are plugged.
Gonna try to work on it tomorrow after school.
Thanks for the compliments.

my bad, didn't know you'd gone through all of that. Did that kit come with new floats? Just a thought. I wonder sometimes if when a bike sits on its side stand if that is enough of a lean to allow the needle to not seat completely and leak over time. Well, good luck with that, I hope to see your bike in person on the road someday. Let me know if you ever head down the turnpike.
I don't want you to think I was responding negatively to your advice. I welcome any ideas!!! That's the only way to learn and diagnose these bikes.
No the kit didn't have new floats. The carbs did sit in a box for 5 months. I pulled the float bowls off this weekend to make sure there wasn't any old gas gunked up in there and they were all still clean as a whistle.
I might be able to plan a road trip to the north someday. I'm not sure what kind of range my butt is gonna have on this seat! It's not really built for comfort so much as what would look best on the bike. I think I might have to get some biker shorts with gel in the butt. I've heard they make some for bicyclists.
It's needs to stop making puddles in the garage floor before I can do any riding!

Thanks! I was shooting for the cover but first page will do!
Hey I need some advice from someone whose rebuilt the "SPECIAL" petcocks before. Here's a link to the ebay seller's store for a rebuild kit. It says it'll rebuild one tank mounted and one frame mounted petcock. The parts in the picture looks like it might do both my petcocks with the only exception being I'd need to buy another diaphram. He sells the diaphrams for $12. Please look at his ebay store under "Yamaha" then search for Petcock and tell me if you think that'd work.
The illustration shows a kit that will rebuild both petcocks and the octopus. Only the octopus has a diaphragm. The Petcocks each use the round rubber bit with five holes in it.
Looking at the picture, one kit SHOULD do both. The diaphragm is for the "octy", and the rest of the parts should be for the actual petcocks. I do ride Standards, so I'm NOT an expert on the specials.

I have tried bicycle shorts, but mine don't have gel, it is some sort of pad. If your jeans are loose-cut, you should have no problem getting your gear on. It does work. It might make you feel like you have a diaper on! I have heard that gel seats can make you miserable in the heat, so I don't know how good it would work in the bicycle shorts.

Down to one 1978 E. Stock air box with K&N filter, 81H pipes and carbs, 8500 feet elevation.
I fixed my petcocks!!! One trip to Ace Hardware and $5.83 and they no leaky no mo. I took them back apart and took pictures of the pieces I used so if they hold up, I will submit it as a tech tip.
I took the bottom of the airbox off and turned the fuel on. No leaks. Then I started it and let it run for a few minutes and it didn't leak. I have not started it with the airbox back together but hopefully it will not fill with gas.
Skids, tragically I was born without and ass. Therefor all of my pants are loose fit. Shouldn't be a problem fitting the shorts underneath!
