I saw a very funny episode on NG. They were filming around a small lake on the Serengetti plains.

A lion and three or four wild dogs were raising hell at one end of this small lake. Barking and roaring back and forth...the dogs were trying to take the old cat down and he was calling their bluff.

It was very early in the morning and quite other than the bickering at that end of the lake.

A big bull elephant was about 200 yards away bathing himself. Every once in a while he'd look up at the commotion as if to roll his eyes. This went on for about an hour according to the narrator.


The old bull elephant had enough and strolled toward the yapping and roaring. The cat and dogs never saw him. He got about 50 feet from them and let out a bugle that almost shook the earth and emptied the large pond. It was hilarious...the dogs were running away with their tails between the legs as was the big lion.

That's what I call a "pond moderator".

I've got no doubt bevelled/undercut gears will handle racetrack stuff but not everyone here has the luxury of getting work done by others so not that easy here.

Undercut gears for the Eleven (second gear) is now standard from the factory. I don't think buying stock gears from Yamaha would be considered a "luxury".

Any chance that we here at channel 11 can get you to give us the new part numbers for the new back-cut gears and how much they cost you?

As a matter of fact he said once they’ve rebuilt the transmissions and re-spaced/shimmed the gears…and gone to back cut gears they have far fewer failures.

CHeck out the "New gears for Trans Rebuild" thread, I just posted the info there, it's the same part #'s as the old parts, they(Yamaha) haven't listed any superceded #'s, they have just redesigned the parts, they are still available, just get NEW parts, not NOS!

I was not trying to start a "pissing" contest and wasn't insulting anyone's intellegence. The comment went to a lack of "knowledge" about higher ratios and the repercussions thereof. This fact was brought out by Maximan's dissertation on heavy racing use of these transmissions by Bobby Pugh.

This is a factual history of brutal usage, not an opinion.
Again, I'm not into creating a war of words, which seemed to have been building long before I ever got to it.
As for the newbie, I am for this column, but not for Yams. I have owned Yamahas since 1967(street and MX) and worked as a certified Yamaha mech. through the 70s.
This Forum is a good sounding board for all kinds of good information on 1100s.

I suppose what puzzles me the most is this:

Why in the name of heaven would pggg give a flying flip what anyone would do with their bike? Why argue for so long? Simply state your case and let it rest.

Personally I couldn't care less if any of you do this mod... OR ...paint your 11 pink with purple polka dots!

The only reason I posted this thread was simply to share mine and Chop's experience with this modification. For years people have wanted to gear their elevens taller and keep the shaft but had no real choice other than a 17 inch wheel which resulted in negligible reduction of RPM.

Again...Kudo's to Mr. Chop for having the intestinal fortitude to figure this mod out.

Makes me wonder if some else...that is not a member of this forum...had figured this mod out long ago.

High Geared Information

In a world where few things are free,I am somewhat astonished but yet thankful for the existence of Channel Eleven and the ideas of it's members and their free exchange of information gained from their individual experiences from working on different combinations.I have messed with these things since 1981 and at one time thought I knew it all about the XS Eleven but since I discovered this Web site I never fail to learn something from reading the experiences posted by others no matter how trivial it might seem.There are so many I have learned from, but some who come to mind is Randy from New York and his knowledge of ignition boxes,Blaine Hoopes on XS carburetors,Patrick from New Zealand and his info on rod lengths and my man Maximan on the boat load of info he has given me on everything from carburetors to piston rings,not to mention the fine 17" rear wheel he gave me.Knowledge is power,horsepower in this case and without all of you guys my beloved Attila would be just another run of the mill Eleven.And so, thanks to all of you for your help and I can appreciate various opinions,some I use and some I don't but I listen to them all.I must also admit that T.C. shows the patience of a Saint just keeping this forum on the straight and level as it is very well managed and void of sleeze and vulgarity,neither of which I like.More power to you all! For those interested...I bought 10 of the bronze bushings for shaft spacers. They were cheap and I'll let 'em go cheap. Contact me if you want one.

okay i was following and finally read the whole thread, nice sprocket change!

yeah that new guy got mean fast, and i think pggg's tone was more of a debate and teasing than anything, besides, alot of information surfaced from the debate and in defense of yawl's positions, good.

so i got a few questions, if anyone would care to comment, i will never do that mod, but i can see why one would,

i'm in the process of reasembling my u-joint to drive shaft connection soon, and the way you guys got it sticking out 3mm, and you say, it will never come out,


do you think yamaha put that clip in there to keep it together in case the u-joint broke? (yeah right)


or to prevent even the slightest shifting thereby pumping the grease off the driveshaft to pinion connection?

did the 750 have this clip,... oh i should lokk at the pictures(lazy)

and why would you fill the cavity with 30cc's of grease, won't the centrifical force of the assembly fling the stuff away from the intended area, and work it's way up the tube?

any enlightenment would be cool man just cool....

Just right 4 me....

I have done the final replacement with a 750 final that cost me $29.95 and I'm very happy with the results. 3500 RPM used to give me 50 MPH, now it's 60 MPH. Before the mod, I would have to go to reserve at 110 miles, now at 140 miles, makes 175 miles between fillups really nice. I can't seem to feel any difference in "git up and go", except that the front wheel doesn't come up so easily in 2nd gear.

I've got a couple thousand miles on mine now with no problems.

Yes the 750 shaft had a retainer clip on it.

The proof will be in the pudding. At the end of the 2007 riding season I will easily have 10,000 miles on this mod (maybe more). I will then report back how it's holding up. I suspect it will prove to be fine. But then again it may not. Only time will tell.

yeah i still haven't worked out the new 4 into 1's i know i'll never get the bottom back but the mid and top seems off as well,

this may prolly make my lack of bottom more pronounced.

yeah the between fill-ups sounds good though

the bluestreak will have @5000mi by the end of the summer....
i think this mod will increase the service life of the motor if you do alot of hiway miles....I also have noticed that the engine is not as hot after my long freeway commutes...duh...like maxi said....chop
