  • i thought in engine 101 class,

was that when running the oil pressure lifts the journals off the bearings and that is why cold start up's are more detrimental than actual hours the engine runs.

and besides, these pups are bullet proof right, we all try to break them every day!

yes this rolling mod/experiment, should have a monitored midterm/longterm wear points accessment and report.

    • o.k.

yeah these motors are tough and torquey, that's why I did the mod. I put a tough and torquey Corvette V-8 in my S10 Blazer that still has the tall rear-end in it and it now gets better gas mileage than the Vortec V-6 that was in it(unless I'm doing donuts in the Wal-Mart parking lot, then gas mileage is not a concern). I plan on doing the FD mod to another xs in the future when I am able to go on state-state trips.....I will keep posted on this mod

      • Daily Ride now has a 750 final drive. I've only got about 500 miles on it, but I like it already! I have a STEEP driveway (ask Eliberty), and I don't have any problems going up from a stop. I do notice a drop in RPM, and the tank will go farther.
This isn't for everyone, but it does work for me.

        • yes brother, i had an 85 corvette with a 5 speed once, i loved that car, it looked great and it did donuts, it only had 220 horse, my 280 slk has 228 horses and with 6 speeds feels like a motorcycle.

plandeick did it on his standard and i was reading the 16 in wheel was the prefered combo, and the math don't support a safe 17 in wheel mod, i guess dick is another rolling experiment,

          hey everything wear out...

so what , at least use guys are innovating and use it or loose it...

            • i had an s10 with a 4 speed once, and traded it for a 350 cu in el camino, or was it the other way around, anyways you win.

i can't go faster than you, in a car, and i have an xs1100 that needs to be dialed in, like i said you win in the haul a$$ department.

on the other hand my gearing is lower

I am just making a point that the taller rear end s10 hasn't torn the tranny or motor up. there will always be someone faster than you or me. matter of fact the s10 will be sold soon because I just used it to remodel a house last summer. It's really funny when you have a load of 2x4's sticking out the back and you can still smoke someone at the stoplight.....

So you did the mod to the "purple people eater?" Awesome!

If I can discipline my self to keep my wrist off the throttle...I've noticed my mpg goes up significantly. And the lowere evs are so much easier on my ears.

                  Now at 85 - 90 Zilla isn't even breaking a sweat.

                    • I am very interested in doing this mod. Once I get the XS back on the road, I will look into it more, probably for next winter.

I have done similar mods on Dodge Dakotas, and with a few engine mods, jumped one from 14MPG to 25MPG highway.

My XS is a tourer, and the extra mileage and lower wear would be awesome.

It's not like starting in second. I really don't see much difference in starting off at all. Mason, you really should come down here and try it.

                        • Like starting in second?!?! Lord no!

It only reduces your gear ratio 12%.

However...to be fair it is not as quick off the line but it is nothing like launching in second.

                          • so is it like going from the stock exhaust to a mac 4 to 1. where the engine labors, just a little bit to get outa it's own way before something happens?

                            • Yeah there's a little lag. Not bad...but there nonetheless. It's just not significant for me But then Zilla is an "pavement shark". He was designed eat thousands of miles of interstate like a 2 year old through M&Ms and so far he does it quite well.

That is why this mod is a killer for long distance touring machines.

                              • It will give you that extra top end to eat the hot rodded ones with stock gearing!

For me, since I have the Windjammer and luggage, the bike will not be all that stable at the top speed, it's more about comfort, quiet, fuel mileage and longevity.
